We had the good fortune of connecting with KIARA BULLOCK and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KIARA, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind me starting my business? , well let me take you back to when I was about 15/16 years old I’ve always had a dream of becoming the first millionaire in my family, but I simply just didn’t know how I was going to do it, I started out in high school when I tried to tap into my creative side, I started out bedazzling shoes just to see how well I knew how to do them, once I seen that wasn’t my passion I moved on and started my own portable candy store inside school. When I say portable I mean I used my old cheer bag to carry around chips, frozen juice, candy and even cookies you think of it I had it. Once I have seen that was working really well for me and also helping me with my communication/people skills I automatically knew entrepreneurship is something I really want to do. I had my portable candy store on and off all the way until I was a junior in high school, my senior year I kinda wanted to do something completely different so I began to sell mink eyelashes from time to time. once I graduated, I knew I had to take the business world more serious than what I was doing in high school so I began to do research on what I actually wanted to sell, I then came up with my business name as ‘DIFFERENT SHADES OF K ” at the time of my having this business what it meant to me was the different levels of my creativity and fun side so I started out with the basics eyelashes, lip gloss, body oil, eyelash washing machine cleaners + the soaps Etc.., I wanted show everyone how fun my creative side was, it took me a year to actually sit myself down look at my business and finally come to a realization that this still isn’t my true passion so I said okay forget it , NO I didn’t give up and NO I didn’t quit why because my main goal and focus was to not only help myself get to financial freedom but also my family as well so I did what any of there business would do I took a break and started to rebrand myself and I’m still rebranding but also still selling eyelashes on the side. When I think of my business, of think of it as a top tier billion dollar business, Yes, this rebrand took quiet some time because I’m actually taking the time out to practice and study my true passion, this coming year 2022 is definitely my year, this will be the year that I will stop at noting until I’m at my goal and all my vision boards that I’ve created for myself has been crossed off because I have everything that I always wanted. Starting a business is never easy you have to have the mindset, passion, dedication and discipline if you want to make it far in the business world you also gotta know your why and why you’re even starting or even entering the business world because that is what going to make you wake up everyday and give it your all like its nothing else left.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Any of My other work that I do is I’m currently in school to become and licensed cosmetologist for my business, I found that I really love hair so much, why not go to school and learn more in depth on how to do hair and put that use of what I’m rebranding my business to be.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take my friend downtown Chicago due to the fact that the city is just so beautiful, I would’ve taken her to batters and berries its a small soul food restaurant that I really love I would recommend their French toast and chicken and waffles their literally so good. Later on we would most likely go to Navy Pier or to the bean to chill out talk and have some fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When beginning my business journey I always felt like I would make it any further than a couple months its not been 2 1/2 years since I started my business, I wanna give a shout out to my Mom for always supporting me, a shout out to one of my closets friends Jayla for always giving nothing but encouraging words and also helping me and pushing me to be better and keeping my businesses up to date. Without them, I probably would’ve been quit.
