We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Tinsley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Whitney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up in an era when having a degree was pushed on us. I went to school and got a bachelors and two masters and now I am finding issues with finding any job in my field. I knew that I always liked sports and knew I wanted to be a sports reporter, so Sports Talk with Whitney B was birthed. I figured that I would start a podcast doing what I love and hopefully it will give me my start in the sports journalism world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I knew at one point I wanted to work in the journalism field but I was a college dropout and working minimum wage jobs to feed myself and my child. One day when I was 25 I came up with an idea to get my masters degree by the time I was 30, I called it my five-year plan. I enrolled back in school for my bachelors. I finally received my Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications/Public Relations in April of 2016. I was 28-years-old. I enrolled right into my masters program and started in June of the same year. After 12 long and hard months, I received my Master of Arts in New Media Journalism at the age of 29. I was so happy to meet my goals. During that program I was to maintain a website, write, and produce actual news stories. It was kind of hard for me to find a job in my field because although I had the degrees, I had no experience. I could not intern because I was working and raising a child alone and there was no way I could work for free. One day I decided to go back to school and get another masters in a sports related field so that when my shot finally came, I could at least have the education. As I was applying for my masters, one of the jobs at a news station I had applied for months prior finally reached back out to me. I ended up starting school and my new job at the beginning of the year in 2019. I was so happy to start in what was one of my dream jobs at the age of 30. I was working in the news room, and going to school which I completed. In Nov. of 2019 I received my Master of Science in Entertainment Business/Sports Management. Unfortunately for me I had to quit my job due to COVID and my daughter being homeschooled. When it was time to go back I could not find anything and I started my own sports podcast, Sports Talk with Whitney B.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I do not live in an area where there is much to do. We would have to go to Traverse City and try some wine tasting. Depending on the time of year, we could also visit Mackinac Island and relax by the water and take in a great scene. During this time of year, she would love to see Frankenmuth and view the Christmas lights and also Bronners Christmas Outlet.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Lloyd Tinsley, believed in me when I didn’t. He told me that I should think about starting my own show. Once I really thought about it and got serious about it, he went out and purchased all of the equipment that I needed. He helped me with my branding and is always passing out my cards wherever we go. I am so appreciative of him and I would not be here without him.

I would also like to shout out Racqi Road Productions for giving me a start under their brand umbrella and for bringing me along on the podcast journey.
