Meet Jon Kidwell | Leadership & Business Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Kidwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In 2020, after 6 years in a job where I found great joy and was very successful, I was laid off.
After 4 months of wrestling with applying for jobs, random and varied business ideas, what my purpose in life is, and where I felt God calling me to serve my wife, Meghan, and I were sitting talking about what to do next. She said, “Well, what do you want to do.” I blurted out, “I want to help leaders be better leaders.” She said, “That’s something.” And, this is where it began.
Through the process of creating a clear vision, plan, and specific services (with a lot of trial and error) we grew to where we are today.
We develop servant leaders to succeed in life’s great missions.
We provide training and coaching, built on Biblically-based principles and practices so that servant leaders can confidently lead in a mission-driven, person-centered approach to achieving tremendous results.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a leadership and business coach. My focus is coaching leaders in mission-driven organizations whether that is an entire team in a group setting or working 1:1 with an executive-level leader.
Two things set me, and The Kidwell Team (my company) apart from other coaches and training programs.
First, is where many focus on EITHER helping you lead people or build the business. We know the two go hand-in-hand and we help people develop the skills and character needed to lead their people well SO THAT they can build the business.
The second is that often a coach or trainer is very niche-focused and trained in one area or domain. Because of my over 15 years of experience in business, nonprofits, small and large organizations, leading volunteers, managing multiple $1M+ business units, and a team of 1,100+ people I can connect with and support a leader based on their situation because of my rich and varied experience.
Was/is building a business easy. No. Never. There are challenges every day. It is a struggle to start where you are and grow to where you want to be. There are constant challenges from finance, to strategy, to marketing, and – of course – problems with the person in the mirror. Because of my great wife, friends, family, a network of supporters, and great clients we can work through the challenges and they make the difficult work worth it.
What to know about me and The Kidwell Team. We are on a mission to develop servant leaders to succeed in life’s great missions. What that takes is a servant heart and a business mind. When we approach work, life, relationships, and leading people with the heart of service – doing it for them – everyone wins. Combining that heart and approach, with a business mind creates a tremendous impact – for you, the people you lead, and the profits of your organization.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For EVERYONE that comes to visit us here in Houston, we take them to El Tiempo Cantina. The one on Richmond. It’s our fav. Every time we take someone for the first time we say, “Here’s the menu. You can get whatever you want. And, we are getting the fajitas – chicken and beef. It’s what we always get, it’s the best.” Everyone joins in on the fajitas.
And, one of the best times to visit Houston and the most fun thing to do is Rodeo Houston. Where else can you get so much for such a great value and a good cause? A rodeo show and a concert, plus everything else. It’s the best.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A friend and mentor of mine, Greg Finke. He founded and leads a non-profit called Dwelling 1:14. Greg has been a tremendous supporter, encourager, mentor, and friend throughout the launch and changes in my business.
