We had the good fortune of connecting with Priscilla Mora and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Priscilla, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was a child I would always be intrigued by artistic or creative things. My mother says she used to find me watching cooking and baking shows in the middle of the night. It wasn’t until 2018 that I really started playing around in the kitchen, and it initially started off as just cooking.
COVID had come around at the beginning of 2020 and I lost my job. After so many people suggested that I get into selling plates, I finally decided to give it a go. I would be selling desserts along with my plates and eventually clients would be ordering full cakes. December came around and it was my nephews birthday, i decided to get really creative with it and I made him a Lego cake. Came out a lot better than I expected it to. I then had more people asking me about decorative cakes. After 2 or 3 more cakes I thought to myself ” I think I’m onto something here “. With my will to push forward and keep learning about decorative cakes, along with the constant support and trust my clients have had with me, I have learned so much and found a passion that truly fuels my heart and soul.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I definitely consider decorative cakes or baking, art. It takes a lot skill and patience. I very much pride myself on making absolutely everything from scratch. Taking those extra steps so that your treats will be as fresh and tasty as possible. I offer things like home made ice cream, jolly rancher tajin breakable hearts, as well as chocolate breakable hearts and other chocolate dipped treats. Apple pie cookies are a personal favorite! But nothing tops my tres leches cupcakes! I’m extremely proud of myself. How much I have pushed myself to learn, How far I’ve come in such little time. I’m excited that this is my second interview for a Houston magazine.
The best way I can sum up how I got to where I am today is, I just kept pushing forward, I took every loss and lesson and applied it to ensure I wouldn’t fail when the issue arose again. Entrepreneurship is far from easy, there is so much behind the scenes that people don’t know about. The smaller the business, the more hats the owner has to wear.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m really an adventurer, I would most likely take them to my favorite bike trail in cypress. Have some Egg Haus Gourmet for breakfast. See if there is any events at discovery green. I’ve always loved Old town Spring. Definitely see if there any markets going on to support other small businesses.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my loved ones. Those who come and sit with me at my pop ups, those who help me out with my son when I have a lot of work to do, those who share my work, those who encourage me, those who provide uplifting words when I’m on the brink of giving up.. always reminding me of how far I’ve come and what I’m capable of. I don’t know how I would be where I am without them. Dedicated to my loved ones, to my therapist, to an amazing organization that has helped me through so much.
Thank you all so much.
