We had the good fortune of connecting with Shikira Gilbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shikira, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
NEVER GIVE UP! No matter what obstacles have been thrown my way I’ve always believed I can achieve whatever my dreams and desires are. I’ve worked hard, been patient and trusted the process to achieve my goals for my brand.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a healthy hair stylist in Houston I pride myself in always being informative to all my clients on their personal hair goals and making them feel beautiful in their natural beauty.

When I first started doing hair in high school I honestly did not believe in myself at all. I was in the cosmetology program my high school offered and always felt I was never good as some of my fellow classmates. I allowed that self doubt to send me down a path of not following my dreams and working dead end jobs that I had no passion for. One day I found myself in the break room at a grocery job I was working in tears because I was so unhappy in what I was doing, I just knew this wasn’t going to be the rest of my life.

After that day I began researching how to get back into cosmetology school. A few months later I enrolled full time at Paul Mitchell The School Houston and my journey started all over again. Cosmetology school was no joke, it was hard work and determination. Long days and a lot of broke ones too. Being at school from 8am to 7pm three days a week I had a limited work schedule and wasn’t making much money being a curbside shopper on the days I wasn’t at school, but I never let that stop me not this time; I knew the outcome of receiving my cosmetology license would be far greater then my current struggle.

Reenrolling in school helped me realize that I was good enough and I had the skills and talent to be apart of the beauty industry. I took a passion in doing natural hair and color. I would always volunteer to take clients and open to learning from all my instructors and soaking up all the knowledge I could.

I pride myself in never giving up on ME! It was not easy but when you believe you can, you will! I’ve come along way in this journey and I’m excited for all the good things still to come. I have so many plans to grow my business within the next year and I can’t wait to see how much further I can go in this industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m always down for good eats and having a drink! I love to try new food places, as long as they have a good lemon drop I’m there! Houston has so many great restaurants it’s hard to pick a favorite. I love to get dressed up and go wherever has a good ambiance and good vibes.

Aside from being a local foodie I enjoy spending a sunny day at the park, shopping, going to the movies, and being with family.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to honor God because without him none of my success would be possible. Second shout out to my family for being my backbone during my journey to becoming the hairstylist I am today.
