We had the good fortune of connecting with Laie Holloway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laie, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Outsiders are unware of all the stuff behind the scenes we go through to create our art. All the failures and rejections that we’ve endured to get that one shot. The frustration and sadness and anger. Outsiders just see the finished product and think it’s easily done.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a versatile photographer. I shoot everything except weddings. I’ve done them a few times but just not my cup of tea. I mostly shoot glamour and boudoir. I get excited with every shoot because I love coming up with different techniques and style. I actually get nervous before each shoot. I actually started out as a graphic artist. I would edit my friends pictures and then one of my friends (Sammy Jo) told me I should just start taking my own and it started from there.
Ive learned soo many lessons. Everything is basically trial and error. Like how I let the clients choose what pictures get edited because if they arent happy with the pictures, I wont be. I aim to please.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That has actually happened. I took my friends out to Lago Mar Lagoon during the day for a resort style fun. Then of course Galveston, it might not be the greatest beach but its ours. You’d be amazed on how many people have actually never been to a beach. Then we hit up Buccees. Cause what’s the point of coming to Texas without a trip to Buccees. One of my favorite spots to eat is Irmas Southwest Grill, the lemonade is to die for and the staff is extra awesome. my other favorites are Pit Stop BBQ, Shuttle Burger, The Burger Joint and Fortune Chinese. All are a must!! And for night life fun, we hit up Washington Ave. The Sporting Club, Bottle Blonde and Heart… in that order. But sometimes to just hang, I’d take someone to the museum district and go check out the cool exhibits
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people I have to give thanks to. My mom first of all (RIP). She was one of my biggest supporters and helped me on my journey. Sammy Jo (Carlson) for being my first muse and persuading me to get into photography. I mean we would just go out and practice shooting in random spots just to see what works.
Mike Wilkes, my mentor. He would ALWAYS help me and show me how to use different equipment and how lighting works.
Also Morris Griffin, he’s a huge supporter and letting me use his studio.
