We had the good fortune of connecting with K Brock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Southern California actually. With a split household I was back and forth from the Inland Empire to North County San Diego which is where most of my family is. I’ve met a lot of people growing up and the relationships I’ve made have introduced me into another level of possibilities. From family to friends, the situations I’ve been in required me to grow up quick.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been releasing hip hop/rap singles and albums since early 2017, and just dropped my first double for my birthday this January. Extendo and I have done three full albums and one short EP together. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced the last 5 years is consistency. I want to keep my listeners hungry yet satisfied at the same time so a balance in there can be difficult to find. One method I’ve found to overcome that is releasing a variety of content, between music to stream and live shows to attend but also incorporating music videos and merchandise. One thing Extendo and I agreed on very early; we didn’t want to pop off quick and fall off after a few months of fame. After supervising my numbers in media interaction, streams and ticket sales, there has been a steady climb in numbers which leaves me very satisfied with the work we are doing. Most of my favorite artists operate this same way, from the underground up. Consistently raising the bar in quality from lyricism and presence. I enjoy being truly confident in music that I’ve dropped since 2019 to today compared to my earlier releases knowing I’ve been progressively raising my own bar of quality.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is hard for me to answer! I’ve been out here since August 2020 but with the new friends and connections I’m making I feel like I’m the friend being shown new places constantly! I definitely enjoy the 3rd ward scene on Slab Sunday’s when everyone brings the swangers and sound systems out. However I really can’t pick a favorite spot just yet!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While I have a very small tight knit circle of trustees, I’m grateful to truthfully say I have a lot of friends and supporters. However, I wouldn’t be releasing songs or have had an opportunity to make a name for myself if it wasn’t for the man behind the curtain, Extendo himself. He’s the mad genius behind all of my instrumentals, mixing and mastering, as well as my best friend. Beyond the music, we’ve been through and seen a lot together, and I’m very grateful to have him in my corner pushing me and checking me when I’m slacking, and I’m very grateful to call him my brother. On his own he’s landed Gold records at 19, Platinum records at 20 and Grammy nominations at 21 alongside his multiple placements with household name artists. I’m very lucky to be able to continue to work with him one on one.
