We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashton Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashton, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
FoundationHTX is the community, the community is FoundationHTX. FHTX wasn’t solemnly built as a dance studio, but a home for freestyle community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In 2009, I was going to Norfork State University in Virginia, where dance culture was inspired by Missy Elliot, Chris Brown, Timbaland, etc. When I came back home to Houston, all I could think about was dance. So I started watching YouTube videos and dancing at clubs. I met some local dancers while out and I was directed to my first competition. Speechless, so many great dancers and I’m in the corner sweating bullets. I was so nervous, didn’t stay after my prelim round. Funny thing is I made it past prelims… From here, there was a non-profit name Y.A. hosting dance sessions every Thursday. This is when I met the freestyle community. It was like a drug, I couldn’t stop dancing and just wanted to get better and better. 12 years later, I met Zabala. He wanted to learn popping and animation so I started teaching him. With the help of the krump community support and Zabala we MADE the Monday Session Foundation HTX.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to eat…and drink…so first place for food, Hubcap grill. Best burger I ever had, Philly cheesesteak burger, add an egg and Mayo. BBQ, Triple Js slice beef sandwich, deliciousness. Pizza, The Flat. They also have an amazing frozen mojito. For my beer fans, Kings Bierhaus. They have the best beers in the world. My wife’s and I favorite spot is Local Table. They use alot of fresh ingredients and never disappoints.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
FHTX wouldn’t be FHTX if it wasn’t for Zabala and the Krump community. Zabala’s dedication to learning popping sparked the motivation to build FHTX. Krump community culture, 1 for all, all for 1 is why FHTX is a home for the freestyle community.
