We had the good fortune of connecting with Krissy Osborne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krissy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I grew up taking photos of friends and myself on disposable cameras and polaroids. I loved displaying those photos afterwards in frames, in my locker, or even sending them to friends in cards. As times changed and technology evolved, I found myself always having the best phone and digital camera I could afford so that I could take great pictures. With the birth of my nephews, I was even more inclined to take photos and capture those special moments for our family. When the second one was born in 2018, I decided to purchase a starter DSLR camera and took a beginner course. That led to several other courses and workshops to not only learn my camera and lighting but also posing, editing, and the business side of photography. Besides my family, I had several friends who were willing to be my first subjects as I was just getting started and building my portfolio and one of them even paid me. Not only did she like the photos, but she enjoyed the process of working together, and how quickly I got the photos back to her. It was then that I realized that I was capable, qualified, and worthy of being paid for the excellent service and work I provide. That was when I decided to start Krissy Osborne Photography.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love photographing people and catching their natural smiles and laughter so that they are portrayed in a joyous, light-filled way. I am a designer and organizer at my core so I love to immerse myself in the creative process of picking a location, helping select with outfits, creating the desired vibe for the shoot, and then transforming those most loved photos as art for your home/space. Although I don’t have the most experience professionally in these areas (and abstract painting which I also recently began doing) I do it because I love it, and it’s my gift to the world. What I am most excited about is that I am continuing to explore myself and what brings me the most joy so that I can do more of that. I am a continuous learner who takes inspiration from so many mediums – travel, family, food, architecture, music, and more. I look forward to seeing how the intersection of all of my creative and philanthropic passions can come together to create something new that has never been done. What I want the world to know is that I’ m not the greatest photographer out there, but what I provide in terms of customer service, reliability, good communication, and follow thru will make the process of working with me on any creative project, one you will enjoy and appreciate. The majority of my business is repeat clients and referrals which speaks for itself. I love building relationships and making the experience unique and special for each person I work with. My goal is to make them and their home look their best.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d start with a morning walk at Buffalo Bayou Park, and then stop by Day 6 Coffee downtown for brisket breakfast tacos and a latte, then we’d go by the Museum of Fine Arts, and finish up with dinner at MF Sushi nearby. On Day 2, we’d hit memorial park for a walk or bike ride, have brunch on the patio at Brenners on the Bayou, go shopping at the Galleria, and then end the day with dinner at State of Grace. Another day we’d start out at either Wild or Sunday Press to catch up on some reading, hit a hot yoga class at Black Swan or Big Power Yoga, and end the day with dinner at B&B Butchers or Doris Metropolitan followed by a nightcap at Sugar Room or Clarkwood. Since my day gig is downtown I would probably have my friend meet me for lunch at Guard and Grace, Angel Share for happy hour, and then Chivos for an early dinner in the heights. If there was time, we’d also go to MAD for drinks and dinner, as well as Casa Nomad. We would probably make a few trips to the Deussen or Buffalo Bayou dog parks during the week so that my 2 yr old boxer Leopold can run around and tire himself out on days he does not go to daycare.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Marianne Williamson said to do what you love and give your gifts away in service to the world. Essentially, don’t wait to get paid for something to do what brings you joy. That was motivating for me in a time where I had just moved back to Houston and was searching for a corporate role. Those words encouraged me to just go for it with photography without any expectations, and pretty quickly become a small business.
My other motivation would have to be my wife. She has incredible work ethic and is extremely talented. She has always encouraged my dreams and the pursuit of my own happiness. Her focus and discipline when it comes to chasing her own dreams has inspired me to run after my own.
