We had the good fortune of connecting with Kidricc James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kidricc, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The main thing I’ve learned throughout my years in the entertainment industry is to never make the mistake of thinking you have a friend when doing business, Make things clear and go into a business dealing of any type understanding that a person is dealing with you because its beneficial to them. Protect your brand and product with paperwork before the money comes. Business and personal MUST remain separate or you will suffer for it in the long run. There are exceptions to the rule but most of the time it will come back to bite you. Learn the business and legal side of what you’re getting into. So many artists sign away their money and sometimes even their rights, name ,likeness and don’t even realize it. The game is filled with vultures that prey upon ignorance and take advantage of people and then paint them as the villain when the person realizes they’ve been getting cheated and fights for what is theirs.. You have to give a little to make something just make sure its worth it, or that you can buy it back after a certain amount of time…..whatever it is that you give. You don’t have to be heartless, just learn how to use your heart less and go into a situation thinking about how to protect yourself in the event things go wrong.. Be stern and serious about your business, just make sure you have a value that supports your demands. Learn about publishing and other sources of revenue so that you won’t make someone else rich and die broke.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a recording artist that specializes in hip hop without profanity as of 2015. I release my music through my label that i own. I’m most excited about that fact that I have almost 25 yrs in the game, 17 albums and still have relevancy in the game. I also am a consultant for various artists, record labels, producers and social media personalities. I’m in the process of launching a new company to help others with structuring their business the right way as well as media placements, video placements and radio play. I’ve been doing it for years but now I’m about to create a one stop shop that provides services at an affordable rate. I’ve learned the hard way by losing money, bad record deals and all of the traps the industry has set for artists. I decided I’m going to stop complaining about things and bring the change I want to see
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Dedicated to the artists that paved the way and never got their credit or the money owed to them
