Meet Khia Ancalade | Digital Artist & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Khia Ancalade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khia, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson that my career has taught me, is to never put limitations on myself and how far my talents can truly take me. The moment I realized that I needed to stop playing small , larger opportunities were presented to me in a short amount of time. By starting Khia’s Canvas, I had to learn the importance of putting yourself out there and not being afraid to create an opportunity for yourself, so that the rest will follow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
All of my art and inspiration stems from Black culture. I typically use popular topics, fashion, movies, and music that circulates around the culture to develop my art. I believe that Black culture is very universal and so many people from different areas can relate and see themselves in my art. I feel as though I create a connection with people through my art and services. I try to make others feel seen through my work and the way that I choose to represent the culture through my illustrations. My faceless characters allow for anyone to see themselves in the work that I put out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Me and my fiends can honestly have a great time doing anything, so we typically keep it simple. I would definitely take them to a good brunch at Lucille’s or Taste Bar. I’d take them to Hermann Park so we can just catch up and enjoy the scenery, maybe get in the paddle boats. The most interesting area in the city to me, is the Houston Museum District, it’s so much to see, very diverse groups of people visit the area, and there is beautiful artwork on display.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to show my appreciation and gratitude for my family and close friends; even in times when I would question myself and my journey, they were always there to reassure me that I was on the right path. The constant support from my loved ones, allowed me to truly be confident in myself and my work. I’m honestly grateful for the unwavering love and support that I received on social media, especially in the beginning stages of developing my brand; just knowing that there was at least one person out there that related to my work, is what allowed me to keep going and growing Khia’s Canvas everyday.
