We had the good fortune of connecting with Teia Lettsome and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve been a risk taker since I was young. Truly my mom taught me to be one , so playing it safe actually feels odd to me and I couldn’t be any more thankful to her for that lesson. Risk taking is just another form of bravery to do what you know you’re capable of but too afraid to show. I try to take a risk almost everyday even if it’s something minuscule , because conquering something you’ve never attempted is better than repeating the same process over and over. In my life I’ve learned if you don’t jump you’ll never know if God gave you wings. Try it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is the opposite of perfect and that’s what makes it profound. Everyone has a view of being a replica and being either black or white , no grey shades. I break that barrier. I’ve faced a lot of challenges throughout my art career including self doubt and procrastination. Then I found my primary problem was the fact that I was doing art for recognition and gratification rather than enjoying the process and having my own therapy session. Now each stroke I paint or draw I try to release a bit of me that is tainted with these lies I tell myself. “I can’t do it” stroke(release), “I won’t make a difference” stroke(release). My art is the things I cannot say
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well the only close friend of mine at the moment is Candace ! She’s amazing and I think everyone needs real ones like her !! But I would take her out for brunch , cause who doesn’t love mimosas???!! I know my girl lovessss good music and a good vibe so off to sip and paint perhaps or maybe a museum we both enjoy a good piece. I would also take her on a picnic with a good view, some adult beverages and recreational indulgences ! C’mon you’ll tell me this isn’t perfect?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wanna shout out my mother ! She played an intricate role In my life. It’s hard to explain everything she’s done and how hard she’s fought for me in such a short paragraph but she’s molded me to whom I am today. When I felt no one wanted me including my father, I always knew my mom wanted me. When I felt different and weird instead of trying to fit me in she sat in the weird crowd with me. That’s my best friend. She’s taught me to trust in God and trust my process. You cannot pray and worry, it’s an oxymoron.
