We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamond Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diamond, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think of risk as being very risky (no pun intended) and something that you have to put a lot of thought and time into. I would say that I am actually very risk averse and cautious to the point where it may take me months or years to act on something I’ve been considering. Like typically know what I want but I’m not too sure about it and overthink it. However, as much as I am averse to risk I do ultimately get to a point where I just take the plunge and that is how I ended up a creative virtual assistant and pursuing entrepreneurship. I actually wish I had taken more risks in the past just based on the risks I’ve taken in the last few years.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Virtual Gem is a virtual administrative support business based in Brooklyn, New York that provides executive administrative, project management, and social media management support to creative entrepreneurs who are seeking the support they need to thrive in their business. I am most proud of the way my six years of administrative experience and liberal arts education have enabled me to provide quality service and give creative service-based professionals across different industries the freedom to focus on their “zone of genius.”
My journey to where I am today was paved with support, trial and error, and courses, but I still feel like I have a long way to go. The biggest challenge I faced along the way was narrowing my niche and determining who I wanted to work with, and I have definitely made mistakes in that area, but I have found my footing in the end.
What I want everyone to learn from my story and brand is that life doesn’t always go as planned and that it’s important to invest in yourself and your dreams. I went to college with the intent to be a professional writer, graduated four years later realizing I didn’t align with that dream anymore and pursued another career path that was halted by the pandemic, was presented with the opportunity to be a Virtual Assistant, and well here I am today!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a lot of people that I can shout out I mean there’s my family, but the person I really want to highlight is my sister. My sister really is my biggest supporter and she is the person that believes in me the most even when I’m just like I’m not too sure. As much as like I don’t often take her kind words or know when she’s being serious with her compliments, I really do come to appreciate them because it’s very hard to recognize on your own your talents or qualities or even your efforts until somebody else points it out. She’s always been there for me and she gave me the safety net to actually pursue entrepreneurship. Without her, I honestly don’t know where I’d be and don’t tell her this but I really appreciate her and she is kind of one of my favorite people.
