We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Dominguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, how do you think about risk?
I strongly believe life is all about taking risks and getting out of your comfort zone. Every business has a risk. There are really no instructions on how to run your business because you learn as you go. I was so scare to start my business because like many; everyone is scare of failing. However, we cannot go into a business with the mentality that we are going to fail. I’ve made plenty of risky decisions, some that have caused me to make silly mistakes but I have always pick myself back up and moved forward. I learn from it so that the next time I come back bigger and better. I’ve seen this quote many times, “every risk comes with experience.” If I don’t take risks I’m closing doors to many opportunities that are waiting for me and there won’t be any growth in my career. There are thousands of amazing balloon artist but the worse thing that someone can do is compare themselves to others and not take that risk because of fear. I’m so happy I took that risk of putting my work and skills out for the world to see. Not only have I met some amazing people but I have definitely grown more than I ever thought I would.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create balloon garlands/installments for all kinds of events, I believe no event is too big or too small. I offer marquee numbers along with all sorts of panels to give an extra touch. I strive to give my 110% to each event. My husband, who is also my helper and I love interacting with our clients and getting to know them because to us they are not just another number. We are where we are because of them and we couldn’t be more grateful. I’m proudest when our work is shared with others and all the nice compliments we receive, it pushes us to keep going. However the road has not always been easy, but I truly have the best support system. My husband, family and friends are really my #1 fans. I’ve learned that not everyone is always going to be cheering you on and that’s okay. Always remember there is someone watching you and looking up to you, do it for that someone and for yourself. Do what makes you happy. My husband wanted a unique brand name, we decided to use the first letter of our names to create our brand (Kind -Kimberly) (Charlie – Cactus) (Design- Dominguez) and that’s how we came up with KindCactusDesign.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting from out of town I would take her to Space Center, Downtown Aquarium, Kemah Boardwalk, The Museum of Natural Science and to a sports game because let’s face it Houston has the best sports team. I would also take her to eat a delicious Mexican brunch at Tamales Don Pepe, La Cuchara, Polanquito or Cielito Cafe. We would cool off at the Gerald D. Hines Waterfall Park and get a delicious Popsicle from Popston. If she is in the mood for drinking there are so many breweries to choose from, like Saint Arnold’s, SpindleTap or 8th Wonder. There is so much to do in Houston, I don’t think one week is enough.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Charlie Dominguez along with our amazing family and friends deserve credit and recognition.
