We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Cabrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was to be able to help and make an impact in people’s lives by giving them their confidence back, as a younger girl I was constantly seeking help for my very acneic skin and I often felt disappointed, I probably visited six different dermatologists in my city and I remember always feeling hopeful that one of them could help my skin problems but that was never the case, I started using makeup as a way to cover up my insecurities which made my skin look even worse, I remember when I was in school I constantly had bullies comment about my skin and that would just continue to build my insecurities, I remember reaching a breaking point when I decided to stand up for someone in my school that was being bullied trough facebook by one of the popular girls, her response back to me was “I know you, you’re that one girl that always wears makeup to cover up your acne, poor of you little volcano”, this comment reached so many likes by so many other people in my school that I refused to go back to school at that point, I felt deeply depressed and sadden, I started Skin Journey By Andrea to make sure that whoever feels like I felt back then can find the hope, support, care & the results that they are looking for.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business focuses in bringing the best skincare advice and treatments that are both relaxing and results driven. I think what sets my business apart from other business’ is my own journey with my skin and how this impacts the level of love and care I have for people because I have been in their shoes before, I think what also sets my business apart is how serious I take my education as well as the fact that I don’t do this for money, something else that I would say sets my business apart is the amount of time I spend in cleaning to make sure that every client can enter into a safe space that is super hygienic.
I got to where I am today by letting go of my fears and simply jumping into making my dreams come true, I think the road has been so bumpy but I have definitely overcome several challenges, I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that the only way to get somewhere is by working hard and not giving up because you will continue to face all kinds of challenges but you cannot let those challenges stop you.
What I would like the world to know about my business is that my business was created after hope. the hope of finding someone to help, love and truly care for others and their skin, growing up in Mexico in a middle class judgmental society I was constantly bullied by others in school and I desperately looked for help to better my skin condition but I was unsuccessful every time, I felt hopeless and frustrated, it wasn’t until I became an Esthetician that I learned the importance of both internal and external factors that can affect the skin, this was the key to better my skin problems and with that I have been able to help myself and others trough their “Skin Journey” hence to why I name my business “Skin Journey By Andrea”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area I would take her to eat Thai food at Thai Cuisine Ramen King bar, their food is absolutely delicious, I would also take her to the Museum of Natural Science which I absolutely love, another place that I would take her to eat would be Adair Kitchen, the flavors are just amazing and it is both delicious and healthy! I would also take her shopping to the 290 Premium Outlets & another place I would take her to eat would be “Harlem road bbq”.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m beyond grateful for all the people that have supported me trough this journey, including my parents and family but if I was to give an specific shoutout to someone it would be my husband Ethan who has been so supportive and loving trough this entire journey, he believes in me like no one has believed in me before, I would also like to give a shoutout to my sisters Michelle and Maribel who’s support, love and words of encouragement have helped me get to where I am today, I would also like to give a shoutout to the esthetician I look up too the most “Neriday Joy” she is an incredible mentor, the knowledge, love and care she has for people is unmatched and I strive to be like her in the future.
