We had the good fortune of connecting with Khloe Joiner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khloe, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is determination.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started a project called A Book and a Smile when I was four years old. I had a fear of police officers and after meeting Officer Jessica Berry of the Missouri City Police Department, I decided to help other children overcome their fears. I used money I was saving for a special trip to Disneyland and bought 350 books. I donated the books to the Missouri City Police Department so they would have something to give children when they were in the presence of police officers. I decided to call my project A Book and a Smile because books make me smile. After that, I had book drives and books were donated to other police departments, schools, homeless centers, women’s centers, Children’s Protective Services, adoption agencies, churches, hospitals, and many other organizations. It wasn’t easy because so many children wanted books, especially during the covid pandemic.
I overcame the challenges by having lots of book drives and by asking family and friends for donations.
I learned that there are many kind and caring people all over the world.
I want the world to know that A Book and a Smile is all about giving books to children all over the world. All children deserve to have a book library at home.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting my area and I wanted to show her the best time ever, I would take her to some of my favorite places. First we would go to the Houston Public Library. It is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Next, we would visit the Houston Zoo. It is so amazing. Our next stop would be the mall. I Iove to shop! Next, we would go out to eat at my favorite restaurant. Then we would go to play games. Last, we would go to a little beach that hardly anyone knows about. The sand looks like it has glitter and they say that there’s buried treasure out there somewhere.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother, Mrs. Billye Moutra (Nana), my mother, Loretta Moutra, my father Daniel Joiner, family and friends, Officer Jessica Berry of the Missouri City Police Department, all of the police officers of Missouri City, Mayor Robin Elackatt, Councilwoman Lynn Clouser, Councilmen Jeffrey L. Boney, State Representative Ron Reynolds, and the city of Missouri City, Texas. I also want to give credit to the many “friends” around the world who have donated to A Book and a Smile.
