We had the good fortune of connecting with TaSheena Spruill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TaSheena, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I didn’t choose this, it chose me. From being the oldest of 5 children I have always had to come up with ways to entertain others and keep myself busy. I was the one that had to be the best example for the other siblings. I did very well in school and loved reading which attributed to my wonderful writing abilities and poetic skills. I loved doing crafts with my siblings which now has outwardly come out in my DIY and artistic works I’ve done this far. As far as my cooking abilities they came naturally. I used to see my mom and grandma do it and when it was time for me to make sure we had dinner or lunch while my mom was working one of her many jobs or studying for one of her degrees, I just took charge. I started with those blue bags of viola meals and from there thought I could make that myself. My mom enabled me by buying the ingredients and allowing me to do it myself. There are so many things that have gotten in my way from when I first began all the way until now. One of my biggest obstacles was and still slightly is myself. Although life happens to everyone, I allowed the things I went through to confine me mentally. I have always procrastinated due to lack of belief in my abilities no matter how many people tell me otherwise. I just would see it as them being nice. I’d sit and watch other people doing those same things and be glorified and think why should I do it? It wasn’t until I had a talk with God and He showed me so much that I could have and not even materialistic things but the effect I could have on others with my vision alone. What also drove me to believe in myself was seeing my brother, Jordan Spruill, in your recent publication. I have no idea how I’m going to get it all done but I have faith that God will align everything as it should be if I have faith and do my part. Faith without works is dead! All these opportunities that require me to push myself and do more are being thrown at me and instead of being overwhelmed and looking at the big picture I’m taking bits and pieces day by day to accomplish this all. One day I will be able to show the world what following your dreams and God’s path really means if you dedicate yourself and hand your worries over to Him. If I can just inspire one person I will feel accomplished.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art keeps me the most busy since I create a diverse variety of art. I am a culinary artist and can warm any heart with my amazing meals. I am also a crafter, poet, writer, and a drawing artist. My art is typically inspired by conversations and revelations from God or life experiences He’s helped me through. I do the art to express those things but also to show others that these things are attainable if you just take that first step.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course I’d host in my home and create a meal each day that would be memorable. We love to paint so I’d create some meaningful canvases for us to paint and chat with a nice charcuterie spread. Outside of the home though we’d visit a museum we haven’t been to before and explore a nearby nature trail and enjoy the outdoors. We’d definitely try some food places on our long list of places we have not tried yet that have raving reviews.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
