We had the good fortune of connecting with Lovetty Soetan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lovetty, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I got married in October 2018. By November my husband and I were discussing when we wanted to start having children. At that point reality had set in that I needed something to leave behind for my future children. At that time, I was working full-time at an oil and gas company which was taking up most of my time and attention so I knew it had to start a business that was easy to start up and didn’t take up a lot of my time. I knew I loved doing my makeup and getting dolled up so I wanted something that made other women feel beautiful as well. I decided a beauty brand would be best. By December 2018 I placed my first order of sample lashes, created a logo, and thus, Sumptuous Lashes was born.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I actually got my bachelor’s degree in Biology for Pre-Med. I intended to become a doctor, a pediatrician to be exact, however, life happened and after graduating I came to the hard decision that that was not the profession for me. I am very family oriented. I knew that if I continue on to medical school I would have to make the sacrifice of spending less time with my family and the chances of creating my own family would be diminished. I took a lot of internal conflicts for me to reach a decision, however, now I am a project manager and I get to work from home. I like to say my daughter works with me as she stays home while I work. I love the fact that I haven’t missed any developmental milestones because of this.
What I’ve learned along the way is that you can always change your dream. Though I always wanted to be a doctor, I knew I wouldn’t be happy in that profession. Making the decision I did, led me to another profession I knew nothing about in which I am thriving. This proved to me that anything I put my mind to I could do.
I want women around the work to know it is okay to make adjustments to your life. Just follow your heart and do what makes you happy. Life is what you make it just believe you can do it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love trying new restaurants but my all-time favorite since I moved to Houston in 2011 is Pappadeaux. The bread is so delicious! I really enjoy shopping, so the Galleria, Memorial City Mall, and Katy Mills Mall are a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughter, Amira, was born in 2021. Now, at the time, when I started my business she was only a prayer. I knew I wanted to leave Sumptuous Lashes to my children when I become old and grey so I put a lot into creating and maintaining the mission of the brand to create high-quality products that will accentuate your natural beauty. Amira is only 16 months now, but I hope as she grows she discovers her talent and passion for making Sumptuous Lashes her own.
