We had the good fortune of connecting with undefined undefined and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Our Sisterhood is one of the main factors to our success as Kidz Jamz 2. Most people upon first meeting us compliment our connection and interaction with each other but its from the years of building a relationship with one another. We’re a family of 7 daughters, and 5 of us were homeschooled together. With being home together almost 24/7, it caused us to grow deeper connections with each other. As sisters, we know each others strengths and weaknesses, so we are able to back one another up when we see one needing a hand.
The other factor is we are honored to keep the Kidz Jamm Legacy going. The original Kidz Jamm show started in the early 80’s at the KTSU Radio Station at Texas Southern University. It starred legends like Roc Nation SVP Radio Promotions Lester “Sir” Pace, TV & Radio Host Shelly Wade, Rapper & Radio Personality Jazzie Redd, along with so many more Houston legends. Being able to carry on this legendary show as members of GenZ is such an honor for us. To have the CEO of 953Jamz, Peter Allen, visualize us as the perfect fit for this show, truly makes us speechless. We were able to take the legacy of Kidz Jamm and give it a new look and style that is fitting to this new generation of people.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This one thing sets us apart because it tailors to our value, connection, and the energy we bring. What sets us apart is the fact we are all sisters. Our sisterhood shapes and molds Kidz Jamz 2 to being a unique, energized, and engaging show. In the midst of our show there is a bond that helps us craft Kidz Jamz 2 shows with quality.
For us the most exciting thing about Kidz Jamz 2 is the fact we get to work together. Being that we are so close knit, it’s hard doing a show or interview without one of us. Interviews, social media engagement, and different events are always better when it’s all of us together.
While Kidz Jamz 2 is a rising success for each of us, it came with making many executive decisions. The things that really tailored to where we are today was our ability as a whole to step out of our comfort zones and get involved more than normal. Before Kidz Jamz 2 were active in our community but we took it a step further by going outside of Missouri City to support different events. Events like Shop with Cop Shop with a Jock, and ‘I Am My Own Boss Kids Expo. Attending events outside of our comfort zone helped to put a face to Kidz Jamz 2 and keep our name relevant.
The journey to getting to the level we are at now has not been easy, but it has been worthwhile. When the pandemic hit and everything went on lockdown, our show had only been on air for a couple of months. Cerina had the grand idea of creating our “April Archives” where we highlight the different decades in Hollywood and the entertainment industry. For the month of April in 2020, each Friday we had a livestream party dressed as different characters from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Then that Saturday, we tailored our topics on those decades in music, movies, and lifestyle during that time. By going the extra mile to reach people in that trying time, people grew a love for our show and increased our engagement with our listeners.
While things have been great, there were plenty of challenges that have taught us valuable lessons. Like we said before, our connection as a sisterhood is a vital factor to our show but working together isn’t always the easiest thing. Knowing each other personally can sometimes become an issue when we’re all in work mode. Having to place ourselves in a work mindset while working with family reveals the different ways we perceive information which challenges how we listen to each other. One day we were experiencing some technical issues while on air but delegating did not go smoothly. We were all frustrated, aggravated and not communicating well. Needless to say we talked afterwards to apologize and express each point of view. From there we kind of picked up this habit. If we have an issue that plays on our emotions we strive to communicate better right after. We do that to make sure we keep respect, love, and communication at our core when we’re working with each other.
At the end of the day each of us can agree that it’s easy to give up when any inconvenience occurs but it’s more important to remember that it’s not always that deep. It is so much better to forgive, get back up, and move forward.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So since we all have different tastes in fun and food we gave our favorite places we would want our friends to visit.
Starting with the best place to try something new would hands down be the Turkey Leg Hut. Their turkey legs stay juicy and serve the best tastes.
For some quick eats we love Mod’s Pizza, Velvet Taco, and Lotus are great too! Each place has a unique vibe and eating experience.
If you’re here during the right month definitely go to Rodeo Houston and Carnival. So many things to eat like fried Oreos or anything from award winning food vendors. Being around Houstonians and people from around the world experiencing Rodeo Houston & Carnival creates the perfect atmosphere for a good time. Outside of that you could rent a City Scooter or Go Kart and ride through downtown Houston or go Roller Skating at Funplex. Plus there are a lot of other hidden gems to visit such as the Underground Hall. Either way if you come to Houston you are bound to have a good time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Kidz Jamz 2 would not be great without the love and support we receive from many people on a daily basis, but there are some that are just a lil more special. The first shoutout goes to Peter Allen because it was his interest in us that even made this possible and continues to open doors to new opportunities & meeting new influential people.
Next is a woman with many hats, titles, and children lol. That person is our mom aka Mountain Movn Monica! Our mom has been encouraging, mentoring, and supporting us since day one. Us as Kidz Jamz 2 co-workers and sisters would not be possible if our mom had not instilled in us the value of being connected to one another.
Also shoutout to our dad while he’s a hard working man he always does his best to stay involved with our show and support every chance he gets. The love and encouragement from our parents over the years has truly inspired us to keep going and growing.
Following we have everyone we ever interviewed. Each interview just keeps getting better because of the energy we share with each other. From Raz-B from B2K, Afrobeats artist Teemanay, even Houston’s own R&B group Cette 3, and so many others. Our interviewees play a special role in the growth and support Kidz Jamz 2 has received over the years.
Now last but not the least, our listeners and viewers, we owe a big thanks to each and everyone of them. Every new and faithful listener makes the show 10x better because of their engagement with us. Even though we talk a lot on Kidz Jamz 2, it’s the comments and call-ins that have made the show more extraordinary.
