We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacq Jupiter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacq, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
i am inspired by all forms of art and media. i love music, movies and tv. also cringe internet memes. and most of all, life! i’m from Detroit, MI, where the hustle is different. To me, this city is the most inspiring of all. most inspiring to me is the earth, animals, other people. i’m an avid people watcher.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m not sure I’m truly where I want to be professionally with my art, but I do know I have come a long way. I have always wanted to sing and write my own music, but for years I let fear paralyze me from seeking my passions. I stopped this by experimenting with life, trying new things, and doing things that scared me. I have extreme social anxiety, which stresses me out because I love people, and being apart of the world. But I’ve learned fear is not apart of our passions. We seek our passions to go to the other side of fear. That is Love. The main message I want to promote in my artistry and my music is Love. Plain and simple. That doesn’t always mean Love will be flawless, right or perfect. But it does mean that the love will always be authentic and genuine.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve yet to visit Houston, unfortunately!
My favorite spot in Detroit is the Belle Isle Park for some calming lay in the grass and stare at the sky vibes. I also love the Riverwalk to see the people of Detroit who are performers, or have a hustle and are showcasing it for tips. I love southwest Detroit for some good ass authentic Mexican food. One of my favorite restaurants is Los Altos, they have these drinks I’m obsessed with called a Rusa. I also love this restaurant El Nacimiento, they have good birria. For a good dirty chai, my favorite hangover cure, I love The Red Hook. I love YumVillage, and Fork of Nigeria but they don’t have a restaurant front in Detroit yet (that I know of!).
As far as hanging out, I’d probably hit up this little tiki bar in Southwest called Mutiny. Not great service, and relatively limited seating, but the drinks are good, cool (they light some on fire!) and the overall aesthetic is nice. There’s a club called El Club that I go to for shows sometimes. I also like Checkerbar. If you’re just hitting young adulthood and are kind of alternative, I suggest the Trumbullplex. I spent some time hanging out there in like 2018-2020 and I met a lot of local creatives. Some I’m still cool with. A good all around training ground for young Black artists is the Mosaic Youth Theatre. I love going to the Detroit Institute of Art, MOCAD, and the Charles H. Wright Museum.
As far as general businesses, I love Crescent Beauty, Detroit Flower Company, and Motown Witch.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out Black women and femmes for holding it down in our community for centuries. Specifically my mother, my aunties, my cousins, and the Black aunties in pop culture who paved the way for many young Black creatives today: Nina Simone, Toni Morrison, Diana Ross, and Beyonce. These are people who, through hearing them using their voices, empowered me find my own voice.
