We had the good fortune of connecting with 9tofyve and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi 9tofyve, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Over time, my work-life balance has shifted dramatically. When I first started, I could dedicate endless hours to my craft—writing, recording, and creating without constraints. Now, with a day job that helps keep the lights on, my time has become more limited, and balancing it all feels like a constant juggling act. I’ve had to accept that, for now, my job is a necessary part of the journey, a stepping stone to build the financial stability I need to support my long-term goals.
But that doesn’t mean I’ve let my passion take a back seat. The drive to make music my main source of income hasn’t wavered; if anything, it’s become stronger. Every free moment outside of work is dedicated to writing lyrics, refining my sound, and planning my next move. I know it’s a grind, but I believe that my talent, paired with this relentless ambition, will eventually make music the breadwinner. I’m confident in my abilities and patient with the process, knowing that each step I take, even if it feels small right now, is getting me closer to where I want to be. I won’t stop until I succeed because, to me, there’s no alternative.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My latest album, My Life Starring Me, just dropped yesterday, and it’s a project that feels like my most personal and expansive work yet. It features some incredible talents, including Richard, Alic Walls, Buddieroe, Kiran The Nomad, Second Prez, B Val, David Ruiz, and Milez McDowell. The album is a culmination of my journey, blending influences from funk and soul with the raw textures of rap and R&B. I wanted to capture that classic feel while still bringing a fresh, new-school perspective—creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and innovative.
Getting to this point wasn’t easy. I’ve faced a lot of hardships, including battles with depression, health issues, and countless obstacles that felt impossible to overcome. There were times when it felt like the world was stacked against me, but music has always been my refuge and my outlet. It’s the one thing that’s kept me grounded, even during the toughest times. That’s why mental health is such an important part of my journey and my message. I’ve learned that it’s okay to be vulnerable, to share those darker moments and struggles in my art because that’s where the real connection happens. Music became a way for me to heal, and I hope it can offer the same to others who listen.
I’ve learned that there’s strength in vulnerability. It took time for me to be at peace with giving the world my unfiltered thoughts and experiences, but it’s been liberating. I want my music to be a reflection of my story, both the highs and the lows, and I want people to feel something real when they listen. I’m proud of the resilience it took to get here and the determination that keeps pushing me forward. I want the world to know that my art is authentic, driven by a passion that’s deeper than just creating hits—it’s about leaving a legacy and making a genuine impact. This album is a chapter in my story, but it’s far from the last. I’m just getting started.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d want to give them a taste of both Houston and Austin since both cities have played a big part in my life and journey.
Starting in Houston, we’d definitely hit up Timmy Chan’s for some classic wings and rice—there’s nothing like it. For seafood lovers, we’d make a stop at Lotus, a spot known for its incredible Cajun-style dishes. When it comes to hanging out, I’m not much for clubs or lounges, but we’d definitely check out a live show or two. Houston has a great music scene, so if there’s a concert or an underground event happening, that’s where we’d be.
We’d take some time to explore Houston’s outdoor spots, like Hermann Park for a chill vibe, or maybe check out the art installations at the Buffalo Bayou Park. A drive around the city, soaking in the street art and murals, is always a must.
In Austin, my go-to spot for food is Spicy Boys. I’m there every chance I get—their fried chicken is out of this world, and the flavors are unforgettable. Austin has a ton of great food trucks, so we’d definitely do a little tour of those as well. Since I’m big on staying active and enjoying nature, we’d spend some time on Austin’s hiking trails. The Barton Creek Greenbelt and Mount Bonnell offer some incredible views and a chance to disconnect.
I’m simple when it comes to going out; I prefer the laid-back vibe of exploring the city, hitting up local food spots, and enjoying nature. The real highlights would be the people we meet along the way—fellow artists, musicians, and creatives who give these cities their unique energy. For me, it’s all about good food, good company, and soaking in the local culture in the most authentic way.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe so much of my journey to the incredible people and organizations that have supported me along the way. Shoutout to Akash, Demarkus, and Elton from Dulles for always believing in me. I want to honor the memory of DJ Zin, B Ceast, and Avionadramida (RIP) and give love to Kwes, Phil, and Trig, who have been by my side from the beginning. Houstock, Bybreezy, DJ Yams G, and DJ Teddi have been instrumental in pushing my music forward. Huge respect to my talented producers and engineers—David Ruiz, Jeff Banks (HIBRU), and Cwiswho—who have helped me shape my sound. Big love to Buddieroe, Mickee Lee, GoGhostt, and my crew for keeping me sharp. Richard, Rico from Spanish Harlem, Norman Sanchez, Marlon Chapman, Treś, and the whole Galaxy Music team have been vital supporters. I’m grateful for all the homies from CSM, UHD, and HCC who helped me grow and stay motivated. Special shoutout to my woman Shareece and her mom over the last four years, my little sister Marche, my cousin Ray, and Skinny for always having my back. Finally, endless love to my former guardians and mentors—my parents, my grandma, my Aunt Sandy, and Cheryl Flores. Your support has meant everything to me, and I wouldn’t be here without you.
