We had the good fortune of connecting with Ahmer Dawood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ahmer, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process has always been to make life easier. Once, during a bad thunderstorm, I noticed someone pushing down their car down the exit ramp on the highway in the middle of heavy rain. As we pulled over and asked, it was due to not having gas. In Houston, there is not a vendor who can get to your car at a reasonable turn around time and ensure you have everything you need contactless. Our company allows people to request gas from any location of their choice without needing to even move in order for us to complete the gas delivery as we fill it up and make sure is it completed in a reasonable time period.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Once I left the Houston Community College, I was always driven to be the best I can at the University of Houston. I got the opportunity to start my career earlier and started an Internship that lasted a year and 8 months at one of the big 4 firms accounting firms, KPMG. Given that huge opportunity, I was able to gain so much knowledge and apply it for the next 3-4 years as I went on in other firms as an auditor. After few years of being an auditor, I recently obtained a position at Protiviti as a Consultant. Over the years of working corporate, I have learned so much about the different industries that our world operates today and always got the chance to dig deeper and gain more knowledge even during off hours. Gas Me Up has not only been a business idea but a passion. It is a passion that allows me to help someone else in a situation they might not enjoy. It also helps me cater to those customers who absolutely do not have time or hate stopping by the gas station. I believe in providing a service that can help people at a low cost but also be able to share my passion with them during this journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is not the greatest tourism spot as we have little to offer when it comes to nature/night life that most people look for. Houston is definitely known for food, this week long trip would be full of multiple brunch spots, lunch spots and dinner spots. Over the years, Houston has started to have more businesses that can cater to those hang out spots similar to other cities. In these certain hangout spots, I definitely would still take my best friend for food since there are only a handful of spots in the city that are not good but 100 spots that have outstanding food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My support system has been driven from family all these years especially my wife. Growing up, I lost my father in 2006 who was my best friend. Over the years, we learned to mature at an early age as my brother and I worked multiple jobs during high school and college to ensure we support my mother in anyway we can. Our grandmother, who also passed 2 years ago, was the other source of my motivation. She believed in us in becoming successful with anything we put our mind too therefore I know she would be proud today. As far as my brother and my mother goes, both of them have always supported me in any decision I made whether if it was a corporate job, school or starting my own business. Last but not least, my wife has been my best friend ever since I met her 7 years ago. Being married for almost 2 years now, she supports me like no one else in any decision I make when it comes to business or anything else. Not only is she a great life partner but an honest person who always speaks her mind about anything I bring to her. Before anyone else, I truly get to explain and share my ideas with her in a way where she makes them a lot smoother and better before presenting it elsewhere. Without the love of my family, I would not be in the place I am today.
