We had the good fortune of connecting with Aimee the Medium and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aimee, what do you attribute your success to?
In an industry with a reputation for promoting gypsies and charlatans, I started my business with the goal of breaking that stereotype and helping as many people as possible.
I was lucky in to find a mentor who is extremely well known and respected in the industry. She taught me YOU are the most important part of your brand, and that the most important thing to guarantee success is to stand behind your own ethics and integrity.
When I started my business over 10 years ago, I took her advise and chose to brand my business with my name. I deliberately chose to shape my practice how I shape my own approach to life – with honesty. I advertise every service with a transparency of exactly what to expect and what not to expect. I inform and support my clients through every step of their experience. And if there is any dissatisfaction, I don’t hesitate to offer a redo, a referral, or a refund. There is no smoke and mirrors; I don’t hide behind a curtain or a neon sign. I present myself and my business with an openness and approachability that my clients deserve.
As a result, I have a long roster of clients who have helped me to grow my business and who continue to refer new clients to me as a result of their positive experiences.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a psychic medium and reiki healer. I’ve always known I had the ability, but I never thought I could do it professionally. Deciding to make it into a career was a huge deal. I remember calling my mom and telling her that I was quitting my corporate job at the Walt Disney Company in order to do spiritual readings full time. She flipped out. How could I walk away from a salaried job with room for growth and a future pension, to a client-driven practice with zero clients and zero prospects. Funny enough, I needed her to flip out because I needed to be certain that I was making the right choice.
I listened to my mom, and didn’t quit my job at Disney. At least, not right away. Instead, I worked my spiritual practice in around my “day job.” I did readings in the evenings, and took business classes on the weekends. Slowly but surely, I was building a strong client base, while at the same time shaping my practice into a business.
One of the main things I learned in this process is finding balance. Having a corporate job is nice because at the end of the day, you can unplug and forget about it until the next day. When you’re running your own business – especially one where you are the “product,” there really is no turning it off. I’ve had to learn (and adjust) over the years what my own limits are and to build in boundaries to avoid burnout.
I remember in the beginning, I was proud to have one reading on the schedule every month. Now I have a three month waitlist. It’s taken a ton of hard work to get here, but I wouldn’t change it for anything!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m located in the Bay Area, and I’m super outdoorsy, so I’d take my besties straight up into the redwoods for a day-long hike, followed by dinner along the coast in Half Moon Bay. Of course, we’d have to visit Fisherman’s Wharf and make a trip out to Alcatraz, too. I’d probably also take them to some of my favorite haunts (literally) and plan a tour at the Winchester Mystery House and the USS Hornet.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I honestly couldn’t have gotten to where I am without huge love and support from family and friends. They demonstrated for me that not only do people need and benefit from what I do, but that there are more people in the world who are open to it than I ever expected. I wouldn’t have had the courage to pursue the classes and practice that I have – let alone build it into a business – if I didn’t have them in my corner.
Additionally, there is a short list of incredible mentors who have helped me on my path: the amazing tutors of the Arthur Findlay College, Lisa Williams, Austyn Wells, Andrrea Hess, and Alyson Gannon.
Lastly, the mediums who I’ve learned and grown with. We’re a much larger community than I imagined, and it’s incredible to find people who have been on a similar path as me, and who have the same goals. We support each other and push each other to always be our best, and give our best.
