We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Baylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting Motion Media and Public Relations was driven by my unique experience working in television news and production for seven years. During this time, I gained an in-depth understanding of what media outlets are looking for, and how they operate. I noticed a gap between business owners, corporations, and the media—many organizations struggled to effectively present themselves or tailor their messaging to meet the standards and expectations of media outlets.

I realized there was an opportunity to bridge this gap by offering a service that not only connects clients to the media but also polishes their brand and messaging to fit the media’s needs. At Motion Media, I focus on preparing my clients for the spotlight, ensuring they present themselves confidently and effectively in any media setting. My goal has always been to empower businesses by helping them navigate the complexities of public relations, ensuring they make the right impact when it matters most.

Starting my own business allowed me to leverage my expertise and passion for both media and client service, while providing a much-needed resource for companies who want to elevate their public image and reach.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is my unique journey and the resilience I’ve developed along the way. I didn’t take a conventional path to get where I am today. At 31, as a single mother, I decided to go back to school and change my career direction, choosing Communications as my new major. I knew I could talk and had an infectious personality, but I never imagined myself in television news. I started my career as an intern at Houston’s FOX26 News, and by the end of my internship, I was offered a behind-the-scenes job at the station.

The hardest part of this transition was balancing the demanding news hours while raising my child. But my village—my family and friends—were an incredible support system, and their encouragement helped me manage both my professional ambitions and personal responsibilities. This support and determination led me to eventually work at Houston’s KPRC2 News in a behind-the-scenes and digital position.

One of the things I’m most proud of is how I navigated the challenges of starting over in my 30s, especially as a single mom. It wasn’t easy, but I overcame the obstacles by staying focused, leaning on my support system, and never losing sight of my goals. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, believing in yourself even when it feels like the odds are stacked against you, and the value of having a strong network.

What excites me most now is owning my business, Motion Media and Public Relations, which has allowed me to combine my years of experience in television news with my passion for helping others succeed in the media. I know firsthand the challenges businesses face when trying to connect with the media, and I’m proud to be able to bridge that gap by ensuring my clients present themselves with confidence and professionalism.

At the heart of my story and my brand is the belief that no matter where you start, you can achieve great things. The key is persistence, resilience, and the support of a strong community around you. My story is one of overcoming adversity, and I hope it serves as a reminder that success isn’t about a perfect path—it’s about pushing forward, no matter the challenges.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Houston and we wanted to have the best time ever, here’s how I’d plan our itinerary for the week. Houston has so much to offer, so we’d make sure to enjoy a mix of good food, outdoor fun, great music, and lively spots.

Day 1 – Brunch, Park Fun, and a Relaxing Evening

We’d start the day at Mo’s Brunch and Brews, one of my favorite spots in the city. This place offers a vegan twist on classic brunch dishes, and their specialty mimosas are named after iconic R&B and Soul artists, which makes it a unique experience. Plus, the vinyl shop vibe adds a cool touch, perfect for music lovers. It’s also family-friendly, so it’s great for bringing the kids along.

After brunch, we’d head over to Hermann Park to walk off the delicious food. We could feed the ducks, ride the train, or even take on the famous hill at Miller Outdoor Theater. It’s a nice, relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors and experience a bit of Houston’s natural beauty.

Later, we’d head home to relax and chill for a bit (because, let’s face it, we’re the Auntie’s now, haha).

Day 2 – Fine Dining and Nightlife

For dinner, we’d treat ourselves to a fine dining experience at The Warwick. The ambiance is upscale, and the menu is delicious—perfect for a special evening out. We’d enjoy great food, cocktails, and some incredible conversation.

After dinner, we’d head over to Rockhouse on Richmond Ave. This place has live music, and it’s one of my favorite spots to dance the night away. The energy is always great, and we’d finish the night enjoying the music and dancing to some fun tunes. What’s even more impressive is that both The Warwick and Rockhouse are owned by the same people, so the vibe and quality are consistent.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would absolutely like to dedicate my shoutout to Khambrell Marshall, a former colleague who became not only a friend but also a mentor throughout my career. Khambrell is a well-known meteorologist in the Houston area with over 30 years of experience in television news, and his guidance has been invaluable. From day one, Khambrell encouraged me in ways that truly impacted my personal and professional growth. He never allowed me to doubt myself or any situation I faced, even when it came to taking the leap and starting Motion Media.

His unwavering belief in my potential, especially when I took the risk of starting my own business, gave me the confidence to push forward. I can still hear his “I know you will do well” speech, which provided the encouragement I needed to pursue my vision with conviction. Khambrell’s mentorship, support, and encouragement were instrumental in shaping the direction of my business, and I will always be grateful for his impact on my journey. He certainly deserves recognition for his role in my story.
