We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Billingsley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There aren’t very many spaces where we see black women represented , honored, recognized and/or celebrated. I wanted to change that, I wanted to tell our stories, share our journeys and highlight underrepresented artists in a unique, vibrant interactive way.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Museum For Black Girls is an interactive, vibrant, selfie experience celebrating the stories, journeys and beauty of black women. It is a place I like to say where we are giving black women their flowers. It is the first of its kind space in Houston. I always say I’m a girl that just decided to go for it! That’s how I got to where I am professionally. It wasn’t easy at all. We opened this space 2 months before the pandemic hit, had to close our doors and storage up everything for a year it was hard. Before the pandemic it was hard to get people to understand the concept and its importance.
We figured out a creative way to highlight underrepresented artists ans a specific group of women and merge that with immersive experiences. This space tells our stories through set creation, for example we have a set called “Grandmas Kitchen” everyone no matter what city or state you are in can relate and connect through stories of the hot combs and getting our hair done in the kitchen for school pictures, Sunday school, birthdays events, etc
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is vibrant and lively and just full of beautiful people! Fortunately there is unlimited activities when visiting this city, which is why The Museum For Black Girls Houston was on list for locations.
