We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Cueto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
For me, my endeavor to find balance has been a career-long journey. In recent years, I’ve piled on more responsibilities; I took on a management role at my brokerage which led into ownership and I began teaching CE classes, in addition to selling real estate. My schedule fluctuates tremendously and some days I have a very heavy workload while others allow me to focus on my home life. The trick is to give yourself grace on the busy days and seize the opportunity to travel or completely veg-out (my favorite) on the slow days. That’s how I find balance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ten years ago, if you told me I’d be co-managing a brokerage with over 330 agents, teaching CE classes and living in rural town with a flock of 17 chickens, 2 cats and a dog, I’d have laughed myself silly. My current reality is a world away from the one I envisioned. Despite always aspiring to leadership and nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit, I’ve struggled with a deep fear of public speaking all my life. As my career advanced, I knew I needed to overcome it. I decided the best way to confront it, was to start teaching real estate continuing education classes. It wasn’t easy and it took nearly a year before I could stand before a class without trembling. Yet, through the struggle, I learned to be more fearless and embrace risks that now permeate every aspect of not just my professional life but my personal life as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
On my side of town, I’d say Space Center Houston. I often forget not everyone has that in their backyard and it’s worth the trip. I’d also suggest spending the day jet-skiing or boating on Clear Lake, followed by dinner at one of the many fantastic local restaurants like Merlion, Marais, Tookies or Pier 6. Honestly, I could talk about our restaurants all day long, there are so many and I feel terrible only naming four! Then to end the night, a little bar hopping and playing Cornhole near the Kemah Boardwalk.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are three people in my life that deserve recognition for the path my career has taken over the years. My broker for his transformative mentorship, my husband for his constant support and patience, and finally my mother for her unwavering love and encouragement. Lucky for me, I get to work alongside my mother and my broker every day… so I am always surrounded by love and learning.
