We had the good fortune of connecting with Andi Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andi, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work-life balance is essential to the success of my business. Early on, because I enjoyed my work so much, I would work nonstop—on the weekends, nights, any time I had free time it felt like I needed to be investing all of my time IN my business. This left no time to decompress and really hindered my creativity because it left minimal time to actually live my life or have new experiences.
Now, I hold strict office hours, limit client interaction to email only (rather than using text or unscheduled phone calls that would interrupt my day), and rarely work on the weekends. I think social media and the expectations of the corporate/industrialized world make entrepreneurs feel pressured to overwork ourselves and put in the 50+ hour work week when it’s simply not an efficient use of time. With more work-life balance, I’m able to be less distracted, more productive, and be more present with my family.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Honey Creative is a collaborative design studio that helps small business owners and nonprofit leaders build confidence and gain clarity about their brand through design. I think what sets us apart from other design agencies is that we prioritize relationships and believe firmly in growing with our client’s needs from just getting started to 10-year rebrands we love watching how they adapt over the years.
I think most other entrepreneurs would agree that building a business is not easy but it’s enjoyable. Honey originally started with two partners that left early on so pivoting has always been a big part of our history. After five years of solo-prenuering, I’m finally building out a team that brings so much to the table both in experience and background. This has also allowed us to provide a wider variety of offerings for our clients.
I’ve learned so much in seven years but at the heart of it all is that relationships are truly at the core of everything we do!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband has been a great support system over the years. He not only hears me out but provides helpful direction when I need it most. Whether it’s making a business decision or just listening to me vent, he’s been instrumental in Honey’s hero story.
