We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Hunter-Greenaway and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikki, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
“Postpartum care sucks. Be the change you want to see”. I’m of the mindset that when I see a problem I have to fix it because once you know you can’t not know. Well when you work in a huge hospital system or even in a clinic implementing change takes too long for me. Postpartum families can’t wait for the politics to get sorted out. So I started my own practice.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m Nurse Nikki. I am a board certified family nurse practitioner and an international board certified lactation consultant. I thrive at the intersection of maternal care and reproductive justice. My practice Bloom Maternal Health provides personalized, patient-centered, respectful postpartum and reproductive health care to families in both New Orleans and Houston. Bloom, which we started about 10 years ago, is unique in that we provide all of this care in the home. We meet clients where they are, literally and figuratively, and give them the care they need when they need it most. The challenge with this care model is insurers don’t get it. Hospitals don’t get it. Even some patients don’t get it. But the maternal morbidity and mortality stats are glaring. I overcome skepticism by doing what I know is right. I’ve done this since day one. And slowly but surely folks are coming around. Patience is key. I quickly realized my model of care wasn’t popular. But how did this model thrive in every other corner of the world and not here, one of the richest nations in the world. I pushed on. I want folks to know that Nurse Nikki works for her clients. I will always center the patient and their experiences even when mainstream health care doesn’t agree or ignores them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I’m new to Houston. I’ve lived here maybe 5 months but I’m a foodie at heart. Lucille’s is one of my favorite restaurants so far. Another good spot is in Rosenberg Witt Pit BBQ. The drive is worth it. I love the farmers markets. I love supporting local farmers and artisans.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My therapist has helped me navigate the ebbs and flows of being a parent, spouse and entrepreneur. Each one of those roles is demanding by itself but when you combine them, well you need helping with coping skills, conflict resolution, and self care. My therapist give my journey light when it could have succumbed to darkness.
