We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Leal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been an artist since i was a little kid. Expressing myself through visuals has always come naturally to me. Creating my own art pieces is extremely fulfilling and I️ knew I️ wanted my career to revolve around my creative expression. When the opportunity to start my tattoo apprenticeship came up in 2021, I️ knew I️ had to jump on it. Growing up my father always pushed me to tattoo which was a huge motivation when starting my career. Nothing makes me more happy than the freedom of getting to create everlasting art for my clients.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My family’s business “Embassy Skateboards” has always inspired me and influenced my art from a young age. The full color tattoos that decorate my parents bodies have left there mark on my colorful and fun tattoo style. I’ve always liked traditional tattoos and now I get to put my own unique and colorful spin on them. I’m exceedingly influenced by all the talent artist I️ get to work with at “It Always Hurts”. No tattoo apprenticeship is easy, and there were many challenges I’ve had to overcome. Constantly asking my peers for constructive criticism, watching other artists work, learning the ins and outs of how a tattoo shop should run and always drawing in my free time were huge contributors of my success. Finding my unique color pallet and style is not something that happens overnight. Through trial and error I’ve been able to find my place in the tattoo world. As tattooers we’re always learning and exploring what works for us. Staying humble and being open to growth is what keeps me motivated.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My fiancé Luis has been a tremendous supporter of me and my efforts in pursuing this line of work. Through the long days and even longer nights, during the times where I️ didn’t think I️ could ever improve, he stayed by my side reminding me of how far I’ve come. Always motivating and humbling me, I️ truly couldn’t be as committed to this lifestyle without him having my back. I’m forever grateful.
