We had the good fortune of connecting with Anisia Boone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anisia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought behind starting my own business was not a thought at all. I genuinely loved baking since I was a little girl. As I got older I became more and more curious about the decorating aspect. After a while I just started practicing my skills outside of working with Walmart Bakery and Randall’s Bakery, people would ask if I would make their cakes. Next thing you know I had to start charging because it was no longer convenient for me to continue baking and decorating cakes for free. Eventually I seen where it was heading and decided to start Boss Bakery. Now I have my own business that involves my true passion and I wouldn’t change that decision for the world.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before I started baking and cake decorating for myself, I was a student that just graduated The University of Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion and Behavioral Science . When I graduated I planned to attend medical school about 1-2 years after. I was in pursuit of gaining experience for my medical school application and I took on a job as a medical scribe. After about 6 months I was promoted to a manager, managing over 35 scribes with Texas Children’s Pediatrics. Even though it wasn’t my plan, I absolutely loved my job. Unfortunately, Covid-19 happened and I had to leave my job because doctor’s were cancelling their contracts because the service was no longer affordable and I was no longer able to support myself. During the pandemic I took the time to get my CHES certification and have been looking for employment within my education field.
However, immediately after I left scribing I was able to get a job as a cake decorator with H-E-B. Being in between careers and trying to build a business for yourself has been extremely difficult. I found myself stressed a lot or even depressed because I feel that I’m struggling so much to make it in this world. Although I feel I am currently in a low spot, I know that God will not keep me here forever. The Boss Bakery and everything else that has occurred over the past year has opened my eyes to all opportunities and I wouldn’t change it for anything else.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So if my best friend is coming to visit me the first thing I’m going to want to do is to eat, haha. Some of my favorite places to eat is sushi (Q-shi, Ra sushi, etc.) or seafood (currently my favorite place is Mike’s Seafood). We’d then go for a drink and that can be anywhere that’s serving good drinks. I’m the kind of person that just wants to chill and have a good time. I haven’t been out much in Houston since I spent quite a bit of time going out when I lived in Austin so I would have to be introduced to new places to hang out. However I have been want to try out different wineries/wine bars and I will be visiting ErmaRose very soon!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout three special people that have believed in me from the beginning and have been my support team for the past 3 years with the ups and downs of trying to get a business started. The first two are my wonderful parents, they have ensured me that whatever path life takes me down, they will always be there to make sure that I get back on my feet. The other person is my amazing spouse. He has given me motivational talks and has been there to see all the tears and excitement in relation to The Boss Bakery, and even when I probably want to give up and focus on other career opportunities, he keeps pushing me to believe in myself. I couldn’t ask for better support system then them three.
