We had the good fortune of connecting with Arthur Cardenas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arthur, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
A few habits that have helped me succeed is to not be afraid to fail or to be rejected. It happens its part of the industry. Its always better to ask then not to ask. That one no might lead to other opportunities. I always ask others who are further in their career than i’am. They have been through many challenges in life and asking them can either prepare you and you can always always learn from them. Books! im not much of reader but at the same time im attracted to books that interest me. I read books on design, photography, typography, architecture and history from the past present and whats trending. Everything from books can be used, learned from and the biggest of all it can spark ideas for future projects.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting to where Im at now was tough. As every creative knows this is a hard industry to stay alive in. Easy was not part of this story, ha! You have to push yourself literally and not be afraid of rejection. I had to put myself out there and not be afraid of being judged, but take it as a learning point for the next. Some lessons i have learned is that no matter how small a project always treat it as a major project. You put your best into it. Sometimes those small projects open doors to large opportunities. What i want to know is that I always put everything into my career. The jobs Ive had the projects I always want to design the best I could.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Week long trip. First would be our great museum district. It has grown so much and there is so much to see withing that entire area. The Monstrose district is also full of views. Mainly to walk around and there is many shops to visit in that area. Our parks are really nice, but my absolute favorite within the city is the Houston Arboretum. What a great getaway within the city. Its small enough to have many large views. Food will have to be in Chinatown, Bellaire area. The food in this area is amazing! Then Taconazo! My favorite taco truck in Houston! The best tacos hands down. Lastly a walk around downtown. Not much credit is given to Houston’s Downtown but knowing the right spots and going up the right garage it will have many great views worth coming down to.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This might be a bit too many but they deserve it. First shou out goes to my family. They never questioned my career path, they supported it full on. Second goes to HCC Westloop south. I graduated in 2012 and the classes and teachers there were amazing! I learned so much from them. Everything i learned i put into use in my career very much appreciative of them. Third shoutout goes to my IG family (they know who they are). As weird as that sounds i have made many close friends through it. All photographers and friends. We all learn from one another and keep pushing to be great! Lastly goes to my mentor, friend, brother from another mother Ninh Pham. I was lucky enough to work with him for a good 3 years plus. I learned so much from him design wise, career and life. Until this day i still get his opinion on projects no matter how small and we always keep in touch and ask about one anothers life and how everything is going.
