We had the good fortune of connecting with B. Sadé and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi B. Sadé, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Detroit, MI. The city of Hustlers. Where I’m from, regardless to whether you have a 9-5 or not, everyone is always doing something on the side. We really invented the hustle culture.
Growing up here definitely molded me. I was ambitious naturally, I had a business mindset, naturally. I remember one time, I wanted this swimsuit from “Kids ‘R’ US (back in the day) and I asked my mom, of course she hit me with the “You got the money?” Knowing I didn’t. That day, all the toys I had in my basement, that I didn’t want and knew I wasn’t going to play with, my aunt and I (We’re only a year apart) took them outside, neatly placed them on the lawn and sold them lol. In about an hour we came up with a whole marketing strategy and the execution was flawless lol. I ended up with way more money than I needed and I felt so accomplished. I got in trouble ultimately, but that was a pivotal moment for me.
I knew what I was meant to do. Running my own business and making my own money was all I aspired to do. Of course at 9, I wasn’t quite sure what industry I’d be in but I vowed that by 30 I would have my own lucrative business. At 31 I launched Haus of Melanin and haven’t looked back! I was a year behind my goal, BUT, I made it happen.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Haus of Melanin is a Organic skincare line based here in Metro Detroit. Although anyone can use our products, we cater to P.O.C. All of our products are organic and handcrafted by me. I am extremely excited with how my brand has taken off in these past two years. It truly warms my heart the love and support and rave reviews we have received in such a short time.
It was definitely a journey getting where I am today. It was such a learning experience and I was blessed enough to go through it all with minor hiccups. The few challenges I did have, I either took it to my sisters in business or I just did the footwork and research and fixed whatever the issue was at that point in time. One thing I’ve learned is it pays to do your homework! Research! Research! Research! Learn the ins and outs of your business, learn your demographic, your target audience, learn branding and marketing, your business. The foundation of your business if the most important, so going through the proper channels to build it is key.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Prime + Proper or Texas De Brazil (Steakhouses in Detroit, MI) (I’m a huge foodie, but Detroit only has so much)
Blue Margarita (Mexican bar and grille in Woodhaven)
We’d definitely go FOWLING! (Football and bowling, it’s so fun!)
I love the D.I.A so i’d hope to catch an art show.
Absolutely have to go skating, you can’t come to Detroit and not go skating.
And what would a trip be without fun and games so Dave and Busters is a must at some point!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out my good sisters in business Veronica (Roni) Gibson and Andrea Reese. She’s a licensed Esthetician and owner of Facecard Skin and Beauty here in Southfield, MI.
From day one, Andrea has encouraged me, anything I’ve needed from her, ideas for my launch, encouraging words, product tester when I create something new, she has been there! She did the makeup for all of my girls for Haus of Melanin’s very first photoshoot, although she was lightweight retired as an MUA.
I just want to shout her out as being one of my biggest supporters and I want to thank her for believing in me. I love you girl! Thank you for being my rock!
As for Veronica, what can I say, she’s been a really good friend and creative maven since my later years in high school, since then, she has brought every vision I’ve had for my brand to life in the most amazing way! From my first launch of Haus of Melanin, to my amazing rebranding! I am so thankful for her and her company The CX Branding Agency. I don’t care what time of day or night I’ve come with some idea, she’s been there ready to work. Her ambition, motivation and hard work is top tier. Make sure you all check her out!!
