We had the good fortune of connecting with Bilal Rehman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bilal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own interior design studio and gallery was a no-brainer as I’ve always seen a missing piece in Houston’s interior design scene. Other major design cities like Los Angeles and New York tend to have extremely dramatic “experience-based” designs that leave visitors wanting more, but being that Houston’s design scene isn’t as developed in comparison, I knew that I needed to bring that approach to design into this market. I envisioned developing a brand that wasn’t afraid of standing out or taking risks but instead welcomed it with open arms. I wanted every element from visiting our studio or gallery to every object we specified in one of our projects to create a luxurious experience for our clients that stimulates all the senses. We take every detail into consideration from the way a room is lit to the way it smells as every element involved in a design can evoke a different emotion. The idea that simply designing a “beautiful” space was enough, quite frankly bored me. There are many more layers to design than just what you can visually see, the way objects feel, smell, reflect light, or don’t are examples of how these layers impact how you feel when you are in a space and I knew that I wanted to create a brand which heavily focused on all the layers of design that many people wouldn’t even take into consideration.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most excited about what 2023 is going to bring for Bilal Rehman Studio & Bilal Rehman Gallery. This brand is more than just a Houston-based interior design studio and gallery, it is meant to also be a lifestyle brand that exudes nothing but the highest levels of luxury. I want this brand to help evolve and improve the way our clients and followers operate in their everyday lives. I have this saying that I live by and use in almost every presentation, “Elevate everyday experiences.” This is such a simple saying with so much impact, everyday experiences such as drinking out of a glass or turning on the lights can so easily be elevated with the right selections of glassware or light bulb temperature. Living in luxury doesn’t have to be out of reach, you just have to know what to do in order to elevate your space. Hence, why we launched the gallery. Our gallery is unique to Houston in that we only carry unique furniture, art and accessories from artists & artisans around the world, we don’t carry the same things as a typical furniture store. We wanted to have a distinct difference in the level of detail and craftsmanship in the items we sell. They had to be something you truly couldn’t find anywhere else in Houston. Aside from our gallery, our overall team is constantly growing and I’m excited to see each new team member blossom into their highest level of creative expression. Interior design has a definitive level of allure and I am truly blessed to work in such a unique industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is an ever changing city in which new businesses, experiences and restaurants seem to be in no shortage. With something new opening every weekend its hard to maintain my top picks in such a vivid city. My current favorites for experiences definitely start at POST HTX where not only is the food incredible, but the experience, lights and rooftop make for a perfect Saturday night plan with friends. With the constant art instillations you can walk through as well as post being the new hotspot for fashion shows its no surprise it’s made it on my list. I love sharing good conversations over even better food, I always find myself going to MAD Houston I can’t get enough of their Spanish influenced cuisines and their over all ambiance. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that its always a hit with friends. If its an exceptionally beautiful day outside I will always opt for a lunch at Toulouse, and it’s a given that there will be shopping after as this restaurant is located in the heart of the River Oaks District. As an interior designer it is in my DNA to always be on the hunt for inspiration and one-of-a-kind pieces, this is why a staple in my creative process always lies within experiencing museums. My top pick in Houston is always The Museum of Fine Arts as I easily could spend hours getting lost within the art.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One person, in particular, I would thank for my success is Kara Wuellner, CEO of The Design Firm, she took a chance on me when I was only 18 years old and took me under her wings to show me the ropes of the interior design industry. I learned so many valuable lessons and important details of design through her mentorship and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities she provided. After being under her wing for over 4 years, I can truly say that she has become more than just a mentor, she is family.

In addition to Kara, I would like to recognize Nouha, my mom, Amer, my dad, Maya, my sister and Sebastian my partner for constantly pushing me to be the best version of myself and being there for me whenever I needed additional support or advice. My family has been and always will be my number one support system and I am so grateful for each and every one of them.
