We had the good fortune of connecting with Bonnie Warren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bonnie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My initial thought process behind starting my own business was wanting to connect with people through my baking and creativity. To me, a cake is a symbol of love in the heart of any celebration and it’s such an honor for me to be a part of that. It started out as just a hobby, but I eventually wanted to share it with people and it has been beyond rewarding.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a self taught baker and cake designer and am operating as a cottage bakery. I specialize in bespoke cakes. My goal is to work collaboratively with clients in designing what is to be the centerpiece for their special occasions while also ensuring their cake tastes as good as it looks. This started as just a hobby. I needed a creative outlet. Eventually, after much practice, I felt the need to share this with others and have the ability to connect with them through my baking and creativity. Every batch is made from scratch and made with love as this is my passion. Upon starting Bonnie Cakes, I did struggle with the transition from hobby baker to business, however I worked on setting solid boundaries and a more formal business structure. I had to create a website to have one place for all customers to go to submit their inquiries. I also had to set a schedule so that I don’t overbook myself and collect a retainer to secure the requested date. It’s been a working progress, but things have been more seamless and efficient than ever. I am proud of how far I’ve come with my skill set, streamlining my business and the clientele I have built.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You cannot go wrong with Houston, Texas! There are so many delicious restaurants, breweries, wine bars, concert venues, museums and the zoo! Just last weekend, some friends and I went to a restaurant called Joey’s Uptown for a delicious lunch and bubbles (it’s right by the galleria mall if you’re feeling up to shopping), The Walking Stick Brewery, and Urban Decant Winery by the heights. We also tried a cute little coffee shop and there was a concert at 713 Music Hall nearby! It was the most perfect day in H-town!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandma who I was named after that I never had the pleasure of meeting. She passed away before I was born, but she was a cake lady as well and I inherited that gene from her! I have been told that I am her made over! I’ve also received so much love and support from my loved ones throughout this journey. They believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. My dad constantly tells me how gifted I am and how proud he is of me. I always hear him tell his friends about my work. It’s kind of funny because he’s this big, tough looking guy and he gets so pumped up about my cakes!
