We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Walker-Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
First off, I have to give all credit to God. There were so many questions I had growing up and not understanding why I went through things but I came to learn that I didn’t have those experiences for me but rather to help someone else. I didn’t have an easy life and nothing was given to me; however, I knew if I remained positive and worked hard, things would work out for my good. That’s the story behind my “success,” so to speak – Keeping God First and believing in the possibilities.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Cherish Our Children Inc (a non-profit in Houston, TX) has created a middle school program that works with middle-school aged children with incarcerated parents. I grew up with my dad in and out of the system and had a lot of different life experiences – both good and bad. If it had not been for teachers, church members, mentors, community programs that exposed me to life outside of the four walls of my community and helped me to understand that I didn’t have to be a product of my environment or become a statistic, my life could have been all together different. This is the passion I bring to GEMS (Gaining Empowerment in Middle School) and what I want to pour into children who share some of the same experiences.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My all time favorite restaurants are a tie between Max’s Wine Dive, Union Kitchen and Snooze. Union Kitchen has the BEST Short Rib Grilled Cheese EVER CREATED IN LIFE. Max’s Wine Dive’s Deep Fried Lobster Tail is Epic and Snooze’s Sweet Potato Mash-Up is divine as well as their sweet potato pancakes. If you ever visit Houston, you MUST try these restaurants. Also, check our The Chocolate Bar for dessert. You won’t be disappointed!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are too many to name but I’ll have to shout-out Ericka Alexander-Anderson. She’s a go-getter, influencer and hustler! She helps me stay focused because her grind is so massive! She has her own online boutique and also has a weight loss business. She’s inspiring and a great friend!
