We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brett, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is an inherent element to success in any undertaking. I’ve been successful in my education, sports, and career. None of that would have happened without taking some kind of gamble. I had to leave my job to get my master’s degree and start my business. Short term it cost me some cash, but long term it gave me ample opportunity to seize the advantages that presented themselves along the way. I also learned by having a different perspective and taking the road less traveled. A lot of my family, friends, and associates were unable to provide me with much advice because a lot of the situations I encountered were unique. That makes everything that has happened thus far more meaningful though, as it makes each little success more magnified and important. To say the least, risk comes along with reward, but the important thing is to measure your own tolerance to the swings along the way.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Bioinvaders Incorporated, is the first company to have an invasive species marketplace on the internet. When users and gatherers of invasive species connect on our website and remove invasive species we also document the data. I am proud of concluding a 7 year beta test marketing study of the impact of an innovative market mechanism on ecology and environmental conservation science. We’ve added and subtracted many components to our business to get to the point where we are today: streamlined and focused. Our website www.bioinvaders.com has very few pages that each function to serve a role in the marketplace website. We also only sell plants now to align our corporate values with legal and ethical concerns. Progress has been easy in some respects because I’ve been dealt a generous amount of resources and skills and training However, we haven’t really seen the commercial success I think because our value proposition is not focused and targeting the most important markets so that is something I have learned that we can improve as well. People should know that bioinvaders is out here pioneering work in a field that is ecologically important but doesn’t always receive enough attention. We have it under control….
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to local spots as well as chain restaurants. For local spots i could chose the Bird and the Bear Bistro, Sherlock’s Pub, Gringo’s,, and places like that. For a true Texas flavor I would take them to Spring Creek Barbecue for some brisket or sausage. Houston has the best food though, you basically can’t go wrong with any options. For breakfast, there’s Shpley’s for sure they are my favorite.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family including mother, father, sister, brother, and nieces and nephews are the biggest constant source of support for me during my journeys. They have been there through the trials and tribulations; and we have weathered many rough storms together. Sometimes family can be a handful as it makes everything you do set within the considerations of a larger group with many members including old and young, and men and women. The greatest gift we give each other is love, and that’s what’s important to this.
