We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Heggins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I created Brown SugHer, all I could think about was creating something that people would need for everyday self-care, and also products that catered to ALL shades of melanin and skin types. I myself have sensitive skin, so I already knew that I wanted my products to be made with natural ingredients only. Nowadays, self care is so expensive. Not only can’t everyone afford to go to a spa, but my target audience was mostly working class individuals who just want to relax after a long day. Brown SugHer not only provides luxury products at an affordable price, but it’s convenient. I’m happy to create something that people can enjoy from the comfort of their own homes.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Brown SugHer Bodycare Essentials, LLC. provides natural skin and body care products for all skin types and shades of melanin. There’s a huge variety of products to choose from, making the shopping experience with us even more exciting. We have products for men, women, and even children. It was definitely a challenge to get my business where it is today, and I still have more goals to reach. I started my business as an online only store because I make all of the products myself. Being online made it easier to keep up with inventory and have a reasonable schedule to ship orders to customers. My biggest challenge was creating a schedule for myself because I’m so passionate about my business that sometimes I forget to relax and give myself a break. Along the way I figured out a way to manage my time while still putting out high quality products.
Now, I have my first storefront location in Houston, Texas! It feels amazing to have a physical location to give my customers the full Brown SugHer experience, and I was able to do it in my hometown. My customers can come in, try my products in person, and get access to store-only exclusive products. I have only had my store location for about 2 months now, but it feels like the leap I needed to make. I hope to continue to grow and have more locations in the future.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, the best area to have unlimited fun in Houston would be the Museum District. Literally everything you need is there. There’s plenty of black owned restaurants, bars, and art galleries in that area. You’ll rarely run out of things to do on that side of town and the food and drinks are always amazing.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been the biggest supporters of my journey in business. They were the first to shop with me online when I first launched 2 years ago, they were in attendance at my first pop-up shop, and when I got my storefront they were there to help get what I needed. I never had to question whether or not if they supported me, so I’m always grateful for them.
