We had the good fortune of connecting with Carrie Pulkinen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carrie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor for me is authenticity. My brand as an author is just me. My life experiences, interests, and my sense of humor fuel every book I write and shape the types of content I share online. Readers know to expect relatable characters, action, adventure, and a dash (or more) of quirky humor in everything I write.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I first started novel writing back in 2009, but it took a few years before I was published. Now, I have over thirty books out, which still blows my mind to think about. It certainly wasn’t easy to get here. I’m an independent author, which means I’m also a business all by myself. I write the books, publish them, and market them. It can be hard balancing my time between the creative and the business sides of my job, but I can’t imagine myself doing anything else for a career. I love what I do, and I hope my readers can feel the same joy reading my words as I felt while writing them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For food, you can’t go wrong with Tes-Mex. My current favorite is Mamacita’s Mexican Restaurant in Webster, so we’d definitely go there. For a fascinating place to visit, we’d head north to the National Museum of Funeral History. In addition to all the history and displays, they have themed markets that showcase local vendors who sell all kinds of items.

On another day, we’d head south to Galveston and visit the shops in the downtown area. We’d have a drink at The Proletariat and take in an art exhibit or poetry reading.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is my biggest fan. He encouraged me to pursue writing as a full-time job and has been with me every step of the way. He has read every book I’ve written, and I would not be an author with over thirty books published without him.
