We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I can’t actually say I started my business, the business end of photography more-so started with me. Being paid as a photographer was a lifelong pipe dream that I never expected to come true. I just initially enjoyed taking photos and had never sat down and thought about having a full on business. It wasn’t until I was asked “How much do you charge” did I actually take this far fetched dream seriously.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I look at my work as my attempt at bringing my thoughts to life. Sometimes reenacting something from my early life or childhood. A movie scene with my own spin or my attempt at creating a scenario where I’m shooting an ad for a company.

I believe what sets me apart is my preparation coupled with the fun, relaxing environment I try to bring to every shoot, I love when clients who normally are not confident in front of the camera feel bold.

I would not say getting anywhere as a creative business owner is easy. You hear a lot of No’s starting out, it can get very disheartening when you feel like you have talent. But that is where passion and love for what you do pushes you until you do hear a Yes. I’ve learned that “No” is actually “Not right now”.

I would want the world to know that I am just getting started and I cannot wait to leave my mark on the world. I feel like my story has yet to start because there is so much I want to do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first thing I would do is take them to a restaurant that they don’t have at home. Houston is known for its food (Lucille’s, the Turkey Leg Hut and The Breakfast Klub to name a few) so that is a must. I am a big museum guy so I definitely would have to take them to MFAH and CAM Houston. For fun we would definitely have to hit Cidercade and play all of the video games from the 80s and 90s. Maybe after that we can end the night at one of the many taco trucks we have in the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would want to dedicate my shout out my Dad. He was a photographer for a few years and was my first introduction into what I am so passionate about today. He would take me along to weddings and different events that he was shooting and put a camera in my hands at 7 years old. My own journey came much later but those days started my love for photography.
