We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We have both wanted to work for ourselves for a long time, and photography was where we were headed from the get go. Richard has had a camera in his hands for a couple of decades, and Christina has a gift for setting the scene and finding truly unique venues and ideas for sessions. It was a great combo.
Starting the business was something that came together at just the right pace for us. We came up with the name “Waterdog and Rabbit” while hiking in Hong Kong (it’s our Chinese zodiacs), and the logo we drew up on a river kayak trip. (We love adventures). But it was Covid that offered us the opportunity to get started. Christina had a brilliant idea for our first photography series, our Front Porch Project. It was a fun way for families to get outside as everyone adjusted to the the lock down. Once we had enough promotional images to get started, we launched our little business and have organically grown from there. Now, almost 3 years later, we’re booking weddings and elopement through 2024, living our best lives and making all the new best friends.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We believe that each person and family is unique, and a one size fits all approach to photography just doesn’t fit. We take a boutique approach, and create our sessions based on their individual style and vibes.
Starting a company is easy, but making it work is a different story. You become a person that wears many hats, and it is like drinking from a firehouse at the start.
Our major lessons learned come down to preparation and planning. With our backgrounds in logistics and event planning, we have found that preparation is everything for a smooth session on all fronts. That allows our clients to relax and let their personalities shine through.
Waterdog & Rabbit Photography holds true to our core values: fiscal responsibility, transparency, overly practical, self sustaining, and to take the time to highlight those amazing people and organizations that help make the world a better place.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Sunday – The Post, excellent mixed use space and to experience the ethnic diversity of the city
Monday – Take them to play kickball with our framily at Lawrence park.
Tuesday – Rent bikes and ride along buffalo bayou, ending with drinks at Fuegos off of Shepard.
Weds – Surfside beach for a day parked on the beach enjoying the
Thursday – Head to 19th street and walk the amazing boutiques and enjoy the inner loop vibes that sets that area apart.
Friday – Fancy dinner at Bisou, followed with drinks on Washington.
Saturday – Take it slow as we explore the museum district, or one of Houston’s amazing pop up markets in the loop.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We want to thank our tribe, and our community. It is through their encouragement, trust, and support that we have been able to grow into who we are today. We hope to continue capturing your memories!
