We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Bennett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, what’s your definition for success?
Success to me is defined a little different than the trending narrative on social media these days. For me personally success is insuring my family has all of their needs met. This includes mental, physical, monetary and emotionally. It doesn’t mean having the newest car on the block, but it does mean having reliable, clean transportation that we like, it doesn’t mean having the brand new model of bike for our hobby, but it means having good working equipment that will get the job done. I don’t care for “keeping up with the jones” and instead I believe success is making memories with my family. Giving them the time they need from me while still providing. Yes, we hustle, but we make sure it’s a balance between work and personal things to insure all the boxes get checked, because at the end of the day when you get put in the ground, nobody cares about the brand new Cadillac in your driveway, but they do remember the love and memories you made together.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I truly feel like the work I do is art. While it does have to function, which is priority number one, for me personally if the work doesn’t have a flow, it’s no good. I believe it goes hand in hand, from a hot rod chassis to a roll cage form follows function but they have to compliment each other. There are a lot of times this means redoing something that I’m not happy with, or time to simply stop, and reevaluate where the item is headed. It’s not just physically demanding work, it’s mentally exhausting at times. One of the biggest things I am proud to admit is that I learn something every day. I truly hope to still be learning my craft at 90 years old, nobody has ever truly mastered something, there is always always always something more to learn and grow and I will never be too proud to admit I am a forever student.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I lived in the greater Houston area for a few years while going to technical school in my late teens. We did a lot of stuff back then that has gone away now but we enjoyed so much. Downtown has some of the best bars and restaurants anywhere in the state but I would also recommend venturing to the outlying small towns, like Magnolia, or Humble. Humble City Cafe has some of the best breakfast you could ask for and such a great American small town feel. Kemah is always a blast and the fishing is guaranteed good in Galveston. I’m an explorer at heart so my advice would be to get behind the windshield and venture out, you won’t be disappointed.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Let’s face it, men are dumb. Guys, we think with our gut and have a hair trigger. If it wasn’t for my wife I would be in debt up to my eyeballs and never get to enjoy opening my own business. She is patient, kind, and caring and most of all considerate. She has known since we have been together this is what I was made to do and she put the steps in place over the last 10+ years to make it happen. There have been several times I questioned her and strained our marriage but without her guiding the way it would have never happened. She wanted this to happen just as much as I did.
