We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my own business after I got out of the Marine Corps. It started as a way to make money and most of my instruction came from YouTube, but it has evolved into a true passion that motivates me and keeps me grounded every day.
After meeting my wife, the company became a family-owned business, which I cherish most. It has been amazing to pass on my knowledge to my wife who is so eager to learn it all. When our 12 year old son is not in school he works with me to learn everything and I am looking forward to teaching our 3 year old daughter the same things so that our construction business will always and faithfully (Semper Fi) live on through our family.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is my rapport with customers, the way I treat my employees and subs and the fact that I can do a lot of the work myself (I’m not just a GC that makes phone calls). Lately, what I am most proud of is the 6000 sq ft shop that I have built that allows me to do a lot more carpentry work for customers, which I especially enjoy.
I got to where I am today through hard work and grinding it out, which, of course, was not easy. To quote Theodore Roosevelt “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” Though at times it may be difficult, I strive to be better every day, to learn something new every day and to above all else stay true to myself each and every day- this is how I measure my success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend is quite the outdoorsman, so I would take him to do as many outdoor things as possible during this week visit We would go to Galveston to see the beach, head up to Sam Houston National Forest to hike and visit the bayou to ride bikes. To satisfy our hunger, we would definitely go to Riel for some caviar tots, Hando for some hand rolls and 5Kinokawa for omakase.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would go to the Marine Corps because a lot of lessons I learned there have been applicable to the construction industry, like having to coordinate teams under high-pressure environments, how to be a well-rounded team player and especially how to “improvise, adapt and overcome” (the unofficial Marine slogan) in any given situation.
