We had the good fortune of connecting with cybur fox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi cybur, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance is very important especially if you have goals or dreams you want to achieve. I never truly realized how important it was until I dove into my tattoo career.
When I started my tattoo apprenticeship. I used to work a 9-5 job that required my full attention and drained my mentality. I would then go to the tattoo studio from to learn and clean. Timing was always unpredictable because I wanted to spend as much time at the tattoo studio as I could even on my days off.
Trying to maintain a balance for friends, family and chores in between was the most difficult part. I’d go home incredibly tired but eager to keep pushing to pursue tattooing full time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Honestly, I feel like every other person with their fair share of problems, I don’t think there’s anything that sets me apart.

I grew up watching anime and playing video games, that impacted my life tremendously. I was the weird kid in the corner drawing anime characters, fully immersed in that world. Drawing is a huge outlet for my emotions, it allows me to create and express myself. Even if tattooing didn’t work out, I’d still draw because art has an important role in my life. Anime and video games has a strong influence on my work today. I am without a doubt, still heavily inspired by it.

The most important lessons I’ve learned along the way have been, being honest and patient. The most challenging part of my career was my tattoo apprenticeship. I eagerly wanted to learn. I did what I was told, came to the studio often even on my days off. I was working at my other job to support myself and had no free time. Tattooing was demanding and I needed to be there full time to dedicate my all in it. I learned being patient, things take time and you can’t rush the process. I put up with all sorts of badmouthing in my apprenticeship but it didn’t matter to me what they said. For me, what was important was being honest with yourself and being your biggest critic. I criticize my work because I want to get better. I question myself because I want to understand.
Tattooing has made me grow so much as an individual. I want my work to continue to progress and meet new people along the way. Super excited for what the future has to hold!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m the worst person to ask cause I’m always working haha but I can try to think of a few places. I would first take them to the best coffee shop in the world, Xela. For lunch/dinner there’s so many restaurants. I would take them to either Cuchara, Honey Pig or the McDonald’s off of Lockwood. They can pick whatever they want off the dollar menu. Just kidding! For hanging out, definitely Kinokuniya or Japan House to see all the anime stuff they have to offer! If they don’t like anime then the museums are always fun to check out! There’s so much Houston has, what matters is the people you’re with!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am incredibly grateful to my partner, Nestor. He’s helped me throughout my career and especially turning my life around whenever I was at my lowest point. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. Thank you for always being there. Thank you for all the love and kindness you’ve shown me. Thank you for showing me that there’s so much beauty in life.
