We had the good fortune of connecting with Daphne Calvin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daphne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a yoga studio that was inclusive. Lots of businesses pay lips-service to diversity and inclusion but the ownership and decision makers are not diverse. I am a Black, service-disabled veteran woman. I have a unique point of view and want to service the yoga community at an intersection that nobody is attending to.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
105 Fever is a wellness studio primarily specializing in Bikram hot yoga. We offer pilates, vinyasa, aerial yoga, and trap yoga. What sets us apart is we are owned and directed by a Black, service-disabled veteran woman who has been practicing yoga for 24 years and teaching for 15 years. We believe in quality instruction in a clean quality facility.

I am excited about bringing yoga to unserved community. Giving people what they want and like classes in Spanish and classes with different kinds of music.

I was in the Army for 20 years so I have always found common ground with lots of people with different backgrounds. This has served me well.

I am self-funded. It has not been easy. I have had to learn everything from the ground up. I have had to lean on friends and family for support. Ask lots of questions of others.

We believe in good yoga for all.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would suggest Breakfast Klub, Snooze AM, Velvet Taco, Graces and the Rustic for food.

Bar 5051, Christian’s Tailgate Bar for drinks

105 Fever, waterfall, see a musical, walk the bayou, visit Galveston, visit Kemah

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who believed in me and this studio – my family and friends. My business partner deserves a shout out for helping the studio and me. The wisdom given was invaluable.
