We had the good fortune of connecting with Dasia Cravens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dasia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a creative career because creativity has been one of my greatest gifts, ever since I was just a young girl. I’ve always been gifted at creating things; from simple arts and crafts, t-shirt painting and sewing, down to digital design. It’s very therapeutic and healing for me, so it allows me to naturally thrive. One of the most beautiful things about being a born-creative is that it grants me ability to use my imagination to bring forth ideas, then challenge myself to turn those ideas into reality. Creativity is something you can literally never run out of, which gives great meaning to the fact that our minds and potential are truly limitless.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Dasia Cravens. I’m a natural born creative from Galveston County – raised in the busy city of Houston, Texas. Upon graduating from James Madison High School, I attended Sam Houston State University where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration. During my senior year, I immediately landed a job at Baylor College of Medicine, as a front desk associate, and then elevated to Referral Coordinator. I worked there for about 3 years, gaining much insight into our current healthcare system, working with diverse groups of people from physicians down to patients, and daily operations for various jobs across the facility. Near the end of my 3rd year at Baylor, I made the decision to commit full-time into running my business, Moor Life Essentials. The journey as a full-time entrepreneur has been no where near easy, but it’s always worth it because I get the chance to turn my dreams into reality, with each day bringing new lessons and opportunities for growth.
Long-term, I am most excited about the ways my brand is going to help change the world by changing the way that people care for their skin and body. Thru working with nature’s elements, I’ve learned the difference in truly healing skin’s ailments versus just masking them. Most skincare products are filled with harmful chemicals and toxic ingredients that cause dis-ease within the body. Just as we should read the nutritional facts on the food we consume, we should also read the ingredient list on the products we use because both have equal power to either help or harm us in the long-run.
Short-term, I am excited about starting my certification to become a Master Herbalist, which will expand my knowledge of herbs and their healing properties in various ways.
When it comes to my brand, Moor Life Essentials, I want the world to know the true power that plants possess and their innate ability to heal various ailments, both internally and externally. Additionally, I’d like them to use this knowledge to choose healthier skin-care products and even how to create their own healing remedies even outside of skincare. It is truly the most important part of my purpose here on this planet.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the Houston area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I’d take them to places where they would have an unforgettable experience. Experiences that touch on all 5 of their senses. A few places that would fall on this list would be:
Candy-topia: Due to it’s ability to bring out your inner-child and fully live in the moment, surrounded by life-sized candy.
Seismique Museum: This museum is truly breath-taking in every way. It simultaneously stimulates your mind and your vision with very room you step into. It’s a beautiful place to activate your creative mind and soak up the uniqueness that each artist created.
Houston Museum of Natural Science: The exhibits in this museum are exhilarating. From the planetarium, down to the exhibits on the human body. Your mind will be in awe of its beauty, and you’ll leaving with knowledge of various aspects of science.
As far as places I’d take them to eat, it would definitely include:
Present Company: Due to its lively atmosphere, great food, and colorful scenery. Even their drinks and dishes are eye-catching as they are full of color & plated-beautifully.
Graces: This is truly one of my favorite places to eat because its delicious, lively, and the outside seating allows you to be present in nature while enjoying southern style dishes that provide comfort & excitement to your taste buds.
Mama Ninfas: The best Mexican food and drinks can be found here. This restaurant truly gives great vibes and authentic Mexican food. Every dish is full of flavor and unique tastes.
Lastly, the best places to hang out:
Axelrad: This area is always lively. They have quite a few delicious restaurants, vendors, and hammocks for you to relax on as your enjoy the vibes. It is also pet-friendly. They have live bands, games, and even books to read, giving you many options to enjoy your time spent there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a shadow of a doubt, my tribe has played a huge part in the growth and success of my small business. It’s important that I give major recognition and share my deepest gratitude to my Moor-Lifers. “Moor-Lifers” (much like “4-Lifers”) is what I call all the amazing humans who support and purchase skin & body care creations from my small business. This group of people consist of various family members, friends, and even strangers – both near and far. A very special shout-out goes to my beautiful mother – Yvette, whose been relentless in her love and support since day one, always going above & beyond to see my dream fulfilled!
