We had the good fortune of connecting with David Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Self-discipline, focus, dedication and just pushing myself and getting things done. So, for me it could involve knowing every karate student by name and understanding why they are starting karate in the first place so we can work on those goals. Maybe they need help with focus, fitness or learning how to defend themselves. I have to maintain my fitness and focus by working out and eating right while maintaining my martial art skills. A lot of people don’t appreciate the benefits of being healthy and free of medication but for me, it’s a way of life. When I was a teenager and started training in the martial arts, I was also very active into working out which included jogging. I remember this one time when I was just finishing up a long run and passed by an older couple who were just out walking, they had to be in their late seventies. The man stopped and said, “you’re not doing this for today, but for tomorrow”. That couple is long gone but the words have stuck with me over time, with that wise old man basically saying your building your health or training ethics for a longer healthy life. I try to instill this knowledge into my martial arts classes to help students understand that with hard work comes a greater appreciation for the goals that they have achieved and somethings that you do today will benefit you in the future. Every Black Belt regardless of the martial arts style was the white belt student who never gave up. No one brags about not graduating high school or college, I feel martial arts is the same, it’s about commitment that involves a lot of self-discipline.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Team K2 Karate has been empowering individuals with martial arts for over 25 years serving Houston, Bear Creek, Cypress and Katy area. Our experienced instructors provide top-notch training in a family friendly environment to help improve focus, discipline, fitness and confidence all with the power of martial arts at Team K2 Karate. For example, K2 itself was named after the mountain K2, like a mountain you start at the bottom and work your way to the summit, which relates to martial arts training and also business growth. Over the years I’ve stuck to the core fundamentals of martial arts when I teach my students and continue to improve myself with other styles of training also such as Brazilian ju-jitsu to enhance self-defense while providing additional benefits to my students and continue the growth of Team K2 Karate.

While training at K2 we stay close to the roots of martial arts with stances, blocking, movement drills, kata and more. old school training with a modern touch. Students are taking the first step towards a lifelong experience by stepping on the mat for the first-time with some training days being hard, some fun and others may seem repetitive but all with a purpose. At Team K2 Karate consistency is key along with the never-ending goal of self-improvement while training year-round, welcome to Team K2 Karate, achieve your goals with lessons learned on the mat, see how martial arts can change your life and give Team K2 Karate a try.

We offer classes for men, women and children starting at age 5-1/2 with specialized martial arts classes that separate the students by age, size and belt levels, so everyone will be in a class they feel comfortable in while learning the martial arts. We invite all new students to try their first class free, they can visit our website at www.teamk2karate.com for more information about our studio.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I can’t really name one spot in particular but in the past after a karate tournament we would find some place great to eat and talk about competing, teaching and training while also discussing self-improvement for ourselves and businesses.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Over the years of competing in tournaments and being a student in martial arts and later becoming a business owner and martial arts instructor has been a lifetime experience while meeting new people, instructors and other business owners has been a lifelong journey.
I would like to thank all my past and present instructors, family and friends, martial arts organizations including the NBL, TKO, AOK and Texas Sport Karate Museum. Without these individuals and organizations, I would not be the person I am today.
