We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Kamilah Brown, Md and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn Kamilah, what do you attribute your success to?
My journey with ADHD, diagnosed at 33, has been nothing short of transformative. Not just for me, but for the countless individuals and families I’ve had the privilege of working with through my brands. ADHD Wellness Center PLLC, Dr. Dawn Psych MD, and Mental Healthletics all reflect a deeply personal connection to my own experiences and struggles with mental health. These brands aren’t just businesses; they are extensions of my life’s mission.
When I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, it was like finally finding the missing piece to a puzzle I had been trying to solve for years. My entire life suddenly made sense – the challenges, the frustrations, the moments of feeling “different” – they were all a part of my ADHD journey. But rather than let that diagnosis limit me, I saw it as an opportunity to understand myself better and, in turn, to help others do the same.
ADHD Wellness Center PLLC was born out of a desire to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals and families living with ADHD. I’ve walked in their shoes, faced the same struggles, and emerged on the other side with the tools and strategies to thrive. My personal journey allows me to connect deeply with my patients, and that connection fosters trust, understanding, and ultimately, success in managing ADHD.
With Dr. Dawn Psych MD, my mission is to amplify the message that mental health is just as important as physical health. As someone who has faced the challenges of living with a mental illness, I know the courage it takes to speak up and seek help. My advocacy and speaking platform is about breaking the silence, shattering the stigma, and empowering others to do the same. I’ve turned my story into a source of strength, showing others that it’s possible to lead a successful and fulfilling life despite the challenges of mental health.
Mental Healthletics is the culmination of my passion for mental health and my commitment to supporting athletes. In my role as a sports psychiatrist and mental health clinician, I understand that athletes face unique pressures that can significantly impact their mental well-being. My work with them is about more than just treatment; it’s about equipping them with the tools to excel both on and off the field. My journey resonates with them because they see that I don’t just talk the talk; I’ve walked the walk.
Through these brands, my messages radiate a sense of attraction and positivity that draws in moms parenting children with ADHD, individuals and families facing mental health challenges, and athletes struggling in silence. My story has inspired them to embrace their own journeys, to feel empowered in managing their mental health, and to understand that it’s okay to not be okay, but it’s also okay to get help.
In turn, these incredible people have inspired the general population, demonstrating that it’s possible to face mental health challenges and still achieve greatness. They are proof that speaking out, seeking help, and embracing your journey can lead to a life of fulfillment, success, and true well-being. Through our collective voices, we’re creating a world where mental health is prioritized, understood, and respected, and where no one has to walk their path alone.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a “serial doctorpreneur”, my journey has been one of blending medical expertise with entrepreneurial vision. Founding and leading two successful medical practices – ADHD Wellness Center PLLC and Mental Healthletics – has allowed me to not only provide vital mental health care but also innovate in ways that challenge the traditional boundaries of medicine. My focus spans ADHD treatment, mental health advocacy, and concierge psychiatry for athletes, each practice addressing a specific need that has often been underserved.
Being a serial entrepreneur means constantly evolving, learning, and pushing the envelope to find better ways to serve my patients and communities. It’s about identifying gaps in the healthcare system and creating solutions that prioritize quality care, personalized attention, and a deep understanding of mental health challenges. The entrepreneurial spirit, combined with my dedication to medicine, fuels my passion to change lives, improve access to care, and set new standards for what’s possible in mental health and wellness.
ADHD Wellness Center PLLC is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for individuals and families living with ADHD. Our approach is rooted in understanding the unique challenges that come with ADHD, and we work tirelessly to create tailored treatment plans that empower our patients to thrive.
Mental Healthletics, on the other hand, is where my love for sports and psychiatry converges. As a concierge private practice, we focus on the mental health needs of professional athletes, understanding the immense pressure they face and offering the support they need to excel both on and off the field. What sets us apart is our commitment to providing confidential, effective, and accessible care. Athletes often struggle with the stigma surrounding mental health, and we aim to create a safe, private space where they can seek help without fear of judgment or exposure. Our tailored approach ensures that each athlete receives the specialized care they need while maintaining the privacy and discretion their high-profile lives demand.
Beyond my practices, I am honored to serve as a board member of ADDitude, where I focus on improving advocacy and research for individuals with ADHD, particularly within minority groups, women, and those with learning disabilities. This role allows me to amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked and ensure that our work reaches those who need it most.
I’m particularly excited about the work I’m doing in legislative advocacy, creating and amending laws to better address and protect those with ADHD and other related disabilities. This effort is crucial, especially when it comes to highlighting the need for more opportunities and awareness for women with ADHD, an area that is often overlooked. ADHD in women frequently goes undiagnosed, is diagnosed late, or is misdiagnosed, leading to mismanagement of the condition. I’m passionate about changing this narrative and ensuring that women with ADHD receive the proper recognition and care they deserve.
We’ve made significant strides in destigmatizing ADHD overall, but there is still much to do. One of my main focuses is closing the gaps in research and policy, particularly in how ADHD affects minority communities and how it intertwines with other medical and mental health conditions that may present similarly. Expanding research and resources in these areas is critical to making further progress.
My podcast, “From ADHD to Amaze-Ability,” and my #1 best-selling book, *The ADHD Lifestyle Series, Volume 1: Secrets from an MD with ADHD: Building Balanced Meals and Exercise Routines for Children,* are part of my ongoing commitment to addressing these issues. This first volume sets the stage for a broader conversation on ADHD, aiming to provide valuable insights and practical solutions, especially for underserved communities. I’m passionate about using these platforms to educate, advocate, and inspire change in the ADHD space.
I also supervise over 12 nurse practitioners across six states, each of whom brings their own expertise and dedication to our shared mission. Working with these incredible professionals is a daily reminder of the power of collaboration and the importance of nurturing talent in the field of mental health. Additionally, I mentor 9 amazing individuals, learning from them just as much as I pour into them. This exchange of knowledge and experience fuels my own growth and keeps me grounded in the realities of the challenges we face in this field.
My work also extends to underserved communities, where I contract as a psychiatrist for two clinics that serve populations in dire need of mental health support. These roles are particularly close to my heart, as they allow me to give back and ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the care they deserve.
The road to where I am today has been far from easy. Navigating the complexities of building and sustaining medical practices, advocating for ADHD, and balancing multiple roles requires resilience, determination, and a deep sense of purpose. There have been countless challenges along the way – whether it’s fighting stigma, addressing the unique needs of diverse populations, or ensuring that my practices remain at the forefront of mental health care.
But every challenge has been an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to my mission, even when the path is difficult. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about personal achievement, but about making a meaningful impact in the lives of others. And I’ve learned that the support of a dedicated team, mentors, and a strong community is invaluable.
What sets me and my brands apart is our unwavering commitment to our mission: to improve and change lives by championing ADHD and other mental health conditions. We are not just providing care; we are creating a movement that challenges the status quo, breaks down barriers, and opens up new possibilities for those living with mental health challenges.
I want the world to know that my story, and the story of ADHD Wellness Center PLLC and Mental Healthletics, is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. We are here to make a difference, and we are just getting started. My energy and drive come from understanding that this is my God-given mission, and I am honored to walk this path every day, helping others find their own strength and success in the face of mental health challenges.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I think about the journey that has brought me to where I am today, it’s clear that my success is not just my own. It’s deeply rooted in the love, support, and guidance of so many incredible people: my parents, my brother, my family, my teachers, my mentors, my friends, and the entire community that raised me.
First and foremost, my late mother, who was not just a PhD educator but the architect of my educational journey. She handpicked every teacher I had up until middle school, ensuring that my foundation was strong, not just academically but also in character and faith. She was my first and most enduring role model; a woman of wisdom, grace, and relentless determination. Her passing left a void that can never be filled, but her lessons and love continue to guide me every single day.
My father is another pillar of strength in my life. He continues to inspire me with his unwavering faith, his dedication to our family, and his belief in the power of education. It was my parents who, when I was just 6 years old, nurtured my dream of becoming a doctor. Their college sweetheart love story laid the foundation for a home built on the values of education and Christianity. They created an environment where I was encouraged to dream big and work hard, and where faith was the cornerstone of our lives. No words can truly capture the depth of love I have for my father. The closest I can come is by acknowledging how blessed I am to have him in my life, always present and supportive. Many of my friends also see him as a father figure – that’s just the kind of person he is.
Then there’s my brother, who is 9 years younger but wise beyond his years. He’s followed a path in psychiatry as well, becoming a forensic psychiatrist, and he’s an amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend. His journey is a testament to the values we were raised with, and I am incredibly proud of the man he has become. His support, understanding, and shared commitment to mental health have been invaluable to me, both personally and professionally. Even though he’s younger, he is without a doubt my role model.
But my story doesn’t end with my immediate family. Growing up in Flint and Grand Blanc, Michigan, I was surrounded by an interconnected community and church family that played a crucial role in shaping who I am today. This community wasn’t just a backdrop to my childhood; it was an active participant in my development. Teachers, mentors, and friends from this community invested their time, knowledge, and love into me. They reinforced the lessons I learned at home and encouraged me to pursue my dreams with confidence.
And I can’t speak about my journey without mentioning Xavier University of Louisiana, the place that truly catapulted my path to becoming a confident, intelligent, and resilient physician. Attending Xavier was a transformative experience because I was surrounded by people who looked like me and were just as smart, if not smarter. That environment was so empowering; it reinforced the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Xavier was more than just an academic institution; it was a community where I was uplifted, challenged, and supported in ways that prepared me for the journey ahead. The lifelong friendships I made there continue to be a source of strength and inspiration, reminding me daily of the power of representation, excellence, and resilience.
My success is truly the result of the collective efforts of so many remarkable people. My late mother, my father, my brother, my family, my teachers, mentors, friends, community, and Xavier University of Louisiana all deserve recognition. Each of them has played a vital role in shaping who I am today, and their influence is woven into every part of my journey. My story is theirs as well, and I am forever grateful for their love, support, and belief in me.
But it goes deeper than that. Every lesson, every word of encouragement, and every challenge they helped me navigate has fueled my drive to succeed—not just for myself, but for them too. They’ve instilled in me the values of resilience, faith, and the importance of giving back. Whether it was my mother’s wisdom, my father’s steady guidance, or the community’s belief in my potential, each has left an indelible mark on my heart and path.
Their support continues to guide me, and I carry their legacy forward in everything I do. I’m committed to passing on the love, knowledge, and strength they’ve given me to others. My journey is, without question, a testament to the power of collective strength, and I am endlessly grateful to each person who has walked with me.
Extended family, friends, churches, my patients, and the broader community have contributed to my success in ways I never could have imagined. Their unwavering support and belief in me continue to inspire and motivate me every day. They remind me that success is never a solo achievement; it’s built on the shoulders of those who pour into us with love, encouragement, and faith.
