Meet Deb Evans | Tax Strategist and Financial Coach for Solopreneurs

We had the good fortune of connecting with Deb Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deb, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
There is a certain freedom that comes with midlife. When I was younger, I tried to fit in with what was expected of me, even when it felt very uncomfortable. I worried more about what other people thought of me. I could have 100 people say they were a fan of what I was doing, but if one person rejected me or unfairly criticized me, I’d obsess over that one person!
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to stop doing that! I’ve developed a work-life balance that works for me, for my brain, for my family. I quit scheduling early morning meetings. I quit wearing high heels. I embraced my inner need to work alone instead of in groups. I welcome working on my couch with my dog in my lap or sitting outside on my porch instead of in an office. I’ve sought out new experiences and opportunities both as business and personal opportunities, which has led to discovering my love of writing books, among other things.
By allowing myself to BE myself, I’ve experienced greater success and much greater happiness in my life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Tax Strategist and Financial Coach for Female Solopreneurs. I have owned my business Deb Evans Tax Company since 2020. From 2011-2020, I was a partner in my mother’s tax practice. I learned from the best!
I am a multipreneur. I love doing different things and following my passions. When I was a child, I never understood why I had to choose just one thing to be when I grew up. Now that I’m grown, I still haven’t settled!
I have spent most of my adult life as a Solopreneur, working for myself. I define Solopreneur as a Self-Employed Professional who is the face of her business. We usually find these in service fields such as Photography, Real Estate, Coaching, Hair and Beauty, Massage, Dog Training, Legal and Financial, and more. I spent well over 20 years running my own businesses as a photographer and a reading tutor before joining the financial industry.
In 2011, I decided to join my mom’s tax practice. She called me her Retirement Plan. I earned my Enrolled Agent license (federal license to represent taxpayers before the IRS), and then added a Financial Coach certification. Mom retired in 2020, and I took over her practice. Combining my professional skills with my experience as a self-employed business owner made it natural for me to want to work with other Solopreneurs.
Has it been easy? Absolutely not. But, absolutely worth it! My practical, real world experience has made this business a great fit. I love working with other women, helping them to start and grow their businesses and overcome challenges. I’m passionate about seeing women succeed. I love speaking to organizations of women in business and frequently speak to Realtor groups. I am excited to be a speaker at The Growth Summit in January. This is an amazing conference in The Woodlands for women business owners.
I have written two books for Female Solopreneurs: “Yes, But…Tax Savings Strategies for Solopreneurs” and “The Profitable Odyssey: A Hero’s Journey to Financial Independence for Solopreneurs.” I’m currently working on two more books: “Taming the Money Dragon,” a sequel to “The Profitable Odyssey,” and an unnamed “Choose Your Own Adventure” book on tax and finances for real estate investors.
I love to write! I’ve always been a voracious reader and writer, but have only been publishing books for the past few years. I have also written and published a series of children’s chapter books called “Bella’s Tales.” This “side gig” is a passion project. I love writing for children and sharing these books with them. All of my books are available on Amazon as well as directly from me.
If I could share one lesson from my life and career, it would be NEVER STOP LEARNING! By keeping your mind open to new adventures, skills, and ideas, you will discover surprising directions that your life can go. Never settle for where you are. There is always more to experience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What a great question!
I’m a huge fan of the Houston Zoo and love the Museum District. So I think we’d definitely need to hang out one day at the Zoo and a second day hitting the museums with lunch at the Yale St Grill in The Heights for an old fashioned diner experience. Then we will need to make the trek down to Galveston. Galveston is a true treasure. We can take a walk on the beach, visit Murdoch’s and buy some souvenirs, head to The Strand and do some shopping and then get ice cream at La King’s, tour The Elissa and eat dinner at Pier 21.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my mother, Meda Dalton Wogan. She raised me as a single mother, and was an original Solopreneur, owning her own tax practice back in the 1970s when most women couldn’t even get a credit card! She’s been an amazing influence, a mentor, and a friend. She always encouraged me to be whatever I wanted to be.
