Meet Derek Flores | Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derek, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m borderline obsessed with things going wrong. I’m oddly inspired by everything going badly. Whether it’s a girl yelling at me at a bar (you know who you are) or getting too drunk and ruining what should have been a chill night out (Same girl actually… my bad) I love writing about it. I don’t know what it is.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Some people like writing “She left me” songs. I like writing “I’m the reason she left” songs. I’ve always felt it was a more honest approach to story telling/songwriting. I feel like that approach sets me apart from other songwriters. Some people like writing about the party. I’m more interested in the hangover.

I’m proud of my band Ethun Hawk’s debut song “Crossfire.” It’s paved the way for a lot of avenues I would not have had access to had I never released it.

I’m excited about my solo debut as a country act called “She’s With Me.” It’s a kinda-sorta sequel to “Crossfire.”

Both songs about the same person. She’s become one of my best friend and I’m very lucky to have her in my life… she hates me right now though. But I can be kind of a jerk.

I am where I am because of bars like “Happy Place in San Antonio, TX, “Senoritas Wine Bar” and Tammy Miranda Music Production (TMMP). They’ve made me a better artist and person through their friendship and guidance. I am forever grateful for them. They’ve all become like family to me and I cannot thank them enough. I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way because of them. I’m a tad more stubborn than most, so I need that extra kick in the head.

Tammy Miranda has been a friend and mentor to me for years now. Without Tammy, I would have never learned any of those lessons I am grateful to have learned. I, honestly, cannot thank her enough (I know I sound like a broken record). I am forever grateful for her. She is the driving force behind almost everything I do. Thank you for everything, Tammy!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Rustic!!! I’ve played there with a local act called The Cheeney Brothers (check them out. They’re phenomenal!!!!!). And their hospitality and respect to their artists is unmatched!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out Drink Up in Harlingen, TX. It’s a woman owned bar. Their owner Christie has given me so much creative freedom when it comes to creating their content. They helped me discover a passion I had no idea I had!
