We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Whitsett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing about this industry I’d like others to know is it takes time and patience to get started. Many people struggle to break into, not necessarily my industry alone, but the one they believe in because they don’t have the financial resources to do it. I’ve wanted to be in the Theme Park industry in some capacity since I was 12 and everything I create or do builds onto that. You have to figure out how to still break in without spending too much money firsthand. Trust me when I say the internet is your friend. You have to be able to use your resources correctly. You’ll know when it’s working.

What should our readers know about your business?
My pride and joy, Myōōzik Entertainment Group is a company I created because of my love of music and theme parks. Myōōzik is another spelling for music. I created stories that turned into books/plays because I wanted to tell a story my way. It started off as stories that reflect my life but quickly turned into ones that challenge conventional ways of life. My first children’s book, Aarav’s Note I self-published back in 2020 and was welcomed with warm feedback. It is the start of something I want as a continuation story, but I also want other people to tell their stories with us. Although Myōōzik revolves primarily around my written media projects, it’s also a real estate group that helps renters and first-time home buyers live comfortably in a home. My goal with that side is to assist you in finding something that “feeds your soul”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, considering I’m an Amusement Park connoisseur, we’d be heading to the closes park here in Houston. That’s Kemah Boardwalk. We ride the Boardwalk Bullet coaster numerous times in the back row, for intensity purposes, touch Stingrays at the Stingray Reef, eat at one of the bougie restaurants, and end the day walking along the boardwalk. That’s just the first day. After that, you might want to sit down for a day or two to recover before we learn about the LGBT scene Houston has to offer!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, I would say overall the women in my life. My mom, sisters, aunts, female friends, colleagues, mentors, and more. Growing up I was very shy and reserved, and still am to an extent, but whenever I spoke openly to different women I felt seen. Seen as in my opinion mattered and I felt safe. Each of them made me understand the world more and take leaps I wouldn’t have considered.
